Saucer Bugs - what do they eat??

I recently identified 2 pretty large saucer bugs in my garden pond - Ive never seen one of these before so was quite chuffed,

couldnt find much detailed info on the web about them. Ive been watching them charge around the pond - they are constantly on the move. They are often described as vicious predators and they certainly have the jaws for it, however I am curious to know if anyone has seen them actually hunting/eating. I've been watching them for the last few days - and have seen them literally crash into small tadpoles, mayfly nympths, water lice and various other potential meals. not once have they made any attempt to strike.

Ive watched water scorpions and great diving beetle larvae have a go at eating most things so was expecting the same form these guys

Do they hunt at night or do they have a certain prefered prey?

Hi NJ, you lucky thing! Sounds like you have got a super pond their I will guess you live in the south as I have only ever once found saucer bugs up here.
Not sure why you haven't seen them munching on anything I am not aware they have a specialized diet?

Yes they will certainally eat all the things you say, they are not particularly nocturnal either, so keep wtching. Also if you were planning on picking one up be very careful they can pierce the skin.
