Anybody want any sticklebacks?

I have dozens of 3-spined sticklebacks in my pond - they are great to watch, especially at breeding time (which seems to be most of the year!). They look after themselves - don't need feeding or anything. I am surprised at how big they grow, given the chance - I have some that are close to 3 inches, although most of them are smaller. They prefer some water movement - mine accumulate under the waterfall waiting for tasty titbits to flow past!

If you would like any, you are welcome to come and we will catch some. I live in South Bucks, near High Wycombe / Aylesbury / Thame. PM me if you are interested.

Re: Anybody want any sticklebacks?

I really did want to introduce some, but having posted the question a couple of weeks ago I think my pond may be too small.

They can breed very fast as well, I guess thats why you have so many. If only my pond was bigger I would certainly have some.

Im sure you will have some takers

Re: Anybody want any sticklebacks?

We would like to report that a breakaway group of sticklebacks was last spotted last Friday, travelling approximately east. The fish were very comfortable in a purposely-bought plastic box in the boot of a car, and were heard to say "Woo Hoo, we're off to explore a new pond!". The biggest fish (approx 3 inches) was attempting to calm the younger ones down, as they were (like all children when going on holiday) getting over-excited and being a little silly.

I am setting up an aqaurium for indigenous fish. I would love some sticklebacks. Can come at weekends as you are not too far around M25.

Thanks

Re: Anybody want any sticklebacks?

Don't know if you're still reading this, Dan, but it's fine legally to move fish from one garden pond to another. It's usually illegal to collect pond fish from the wild, and is certainly illegal to release them from your pond into the wild, whether they are native species or not. Sticklebacks are occasionally available from aquatic shops these days, anyway.

Re: Anybody want any sticklebacks?

I don't know personally, Dan - I've only kept them in a pond, in a mixed sex group.

I think it's only male-on-male aggression that's a problem though, not male-to-female, and even then only if the males don't have enough space for a territory each. Hopefully someone here will have more info.
