| | | What would you most like to find or see? I reckon there are lots of things that we would like to see or find, along our rivers or around our coasts. As we are all spread over the country maybe someone here can help us find it?
Something I would like to find is one the largest of our squat lobsters - Galathea strigosa. It's lobster like, body length up to 90mm, aggressive, red and bright blue. Anyone found one in a rockpool?

| | | Re: What would you most like to find or see? Hi, I've never seen any giant Lobsters but love to go rockpooling and such. In answer to your question I think for me it would have to be a wild Otter or any unusual jellyfish.

Anyone found one in a rockpool? | Are they the only species of Squat Lobster with blue lines across the shell? A few years ago I found a small Squat Lobster with blue lines on the red shell at Studland beach in Dorset, however it was after a storm and I've never seen one since, so I don't think it's a regular spot for them.
Personally, I'd love to see a live Lobster (that hasn't been caught by someone preferably!)

I've no idea about this particular species. However my understanding is that squat lobsters all inhabit rocky shores where they can hide at low tide either in pools or under boulders. The sandy beach at Studland would be pretty inhospitable for them. Yours was probably deposited after a storm.

| | | Re: What would you most like to find or see? Yes, seen lots of Spiny Squat Lobsters (Galathea strigosa) but always whilst diving. They are very common in all rocky areas around the UK from about 3m down so I think they should appear on shore on a very low spring tide, particularly after a blow. They grow to about 12 cms and are very spiky and aggressive. The colour is very striking - a basic red with brilliant blue lines across the body. |
