| | | Re: Snakehead Fish......... I expect it was just someone who had it in a tank and it got too big so they stupidly dumped it in the river. I'm sure if they were breeding there would of been more reports of catches as they seem like greedy so and so's. |

| | | Re: Snakehead Fish......... He was interviewed on Look North last night and had a picture of himself at the riverside holding it, it certainly looked genuine to me, He had been Pike fishing but caught the Snake Head instead, they are hoping it's a one off as obviously someone has released it from a private aquarium as they are illegal in this country, or if there are more than one they don't think they could breed or even survive for too long in the cold water of the Witham, although with it being caught near Lincoln at North Hykham could there be any filtered warmer water from industry being emptied into the river, The worrying thing is they can crawl out of the river and survive for up to 4 days out of water so it could be nipping out for a warm then going back in the water again. We live near the Witham but miles away thank goodness or else I would be a bit worried about letting my dog off for a run incase it came back with one of those things attached to its leg |

| | | Re: Snakehead Fish......... Hi,
Googled around for the fish and there's some interesting photo's of them, at least three ft long, very much like a catfish with teeth and pretty stripes, and recipes with warnings about a worm that burrows into your body after you've eaten it raw or undercooked,[sounded like a liver fluke].
One site said it couldn't spawn in fresh water, had to be saltwater, tell that to the USA.
Max.

Much more likely to be a "dumped" ex-pet: let's hope it's not from some recent trend for keeping such creatures which are then "released" when they grow too big/boring. Remember "ninja" turtles? |

| | | Re: Snakehead Fish......... You can see how someone has perhaps smuggled it into the country if it can survive out of water for so long, lets hope no-ones dumped any Piranas into a waterway or lake anywhere, there's some private fishing lakes in our area and years ago after Terrapins were the in thing then people got fed up with them and dumped them, there was supposed to be some mahusive ones in there, but don't know of they're still there or not, they had managed to adapt to the cold etc. |

| | | Re: Snakehead Fish......... i love this story . not only a fish that needs tropical water temp to survive but we are to believe it was not only alive but feeding its just fear mongering . nice trick though . hope this does not lead to the ban of all snake head species some of them are very attractive . the fact it says deadlier than pahrana just shows how little research was done . pahrana are virtually harmless and do not deserve any of there rep | | | | | Thread Tools | | | | Display Modes | Linear Mode |
