Favouite rockpooling site?

I have had a look through some of the threads on meets and wondered if there is a list of upcoming meets in 2008?
I was also interested in sites people have suggested for rockpooling - has there ever been a rockpooling meet? Wembury in Devon seems well favoured. I don't think you can beat the little stretch of rocky beach below the outdoor swimming pool at Penzance. Wonderful place where I found my first Montagu's Blenny.

This sounds a great idea. Don't think we've had a rock-pooling meet. Providing it's reachable, we'd be up for it.

Re: Favouite rockpooling site?

Good idea

I have only ever rockpooled in Scarborough, excluding any childhood non-serious trips to the beach. I can't wait until the summer really, so I can travel to other coasts

Re: Favouite rockpooling site?

I absolutely love rockpooling although how I manage to stay upright is beyond me. Those rocks can be deadly slippy .

Re: Favouite rockpooling site?

Trust me, I've slipped more times than I can remember in the past few months. From a distance it probably looks like I'm dancing when I try to stay upright

Last time I slipped I hurt my knee quite a lot and managed to break my favorite net in half. It was worth it though, I saw my first sea-lemon that day.

I love the hermit crabs! They are so characterful You're right about the time passing too! On a nice day you can spend hours gazing into rockpools

Re: Favouite rockpooling site?

On a more serious note, can anyone suggest rockpooling site that is renowned for spotting certain marine life??

The ones round St Michaels Caerhays are good for hermit crabs

Hermit crabs are brilliant I would love to see a species other than Pagurus bernhardus though! A hairy hermit crab every so often wouldn't disappoint me

What do you want to spot? Port Isaac in North Cornwall is very good for all the common rock pool species but excellent for pipe fish and sucker fish at low tide. Trevone Bay has a good variety of crabs at low tide as well as everything else.

In fact pretty much any of the North Cornwall bays will yield a good range of pool species in a couple of days.

Re: Favouite rockpooling site?

awww! I wish I could come! I love rockpooling
I took my young cousins rockpooling a couple of summers ago on Skye and ended up with the wee boy on my shoulders while I stood waist deep in the sea getting very excited about anemones and such things haha!

The crustaceans in particular, I'd love to see a few new species, like spider crabs, masked crabs, etc

Not good on crab species but last year we found several new ones including a spider crab at Trevone Bay near Padstow. There were also plenty of velvet swimming crabs, medium sized edible crabs (not big enough to eat) etc. You need to go round to the extensive rocky area to the south west of the sandy beach. Particularly at low tide there are plenty of rock pools with seaweed covered sides and numerous rocks. You could not cover even a fraction of the area at low tide and you will certainly find some nice things. There are also pipe fish (my favourite) and sucker fish there a plenty!

Re: Favouite rockpooling site?

Well as I have now lived in Scarborough for half a century and have spent lots of time on the beach it has to be my fave,,, Favourite spots would be Near the old outdoor pool on the south bay, Scalby mills and a couple of more obscure just out of town places,,
