Unknown Flatfish

I took this photo recently at an aquarium in Derry. I used a high iso to avoid using flash so the photo isn't just as good as I had hoped. ID anyone?

Thanks, John.

Re: Unknown Flatfish

Hi

it's a while since I went sea fishing but I think it could be a Flounder - Paralichthys flesus

Re: Unknown Flatfish

John, if you come river or estuary fishing down here youll catch more of these than anything theyre not to big and they taste of mud, but dont let that stop you. We call em flatties but proper fishermen call them Flounders.

Regards

Re: Unknown Flatfish

Lemon Flounder

Dust two 275g. Flounder fillets in plain flower and shake off the excess. Heat a little butter in a large frying pan and cook the fish over medium heat turnng once untill lightly browned and cooked through.
The fish will flake easily when tested. Transfer to a serving dish and keep hot .
Wipe out the pan and melt 60g. butter. Add 2 teaspoons of chopped fresh parsley. Then season cook untill foaming then pour over the fish and sprinkle with more parsley.
Then throw into the nearest bin and make a lovely cheese sandwich, and a nice cup of tea. . . . beleive me Ive tried both I know.

Regards

Rob

Re: Unknown Flatfish

Isn't it's head the "wrong way round" to be a flounder? I'm sure they are aligned the other way. I can't remember the exact scientific term but there are left and right handed fish, I can't remember how you decide which is which. I think I might be wrong though. Actually scrap that, I reckon it is a flounder. Or is it a dab? It definitly ain't a turbot, sole or plaice.

Re: Unknown Flatfish

nah, I think it's a flounder. If you need ID help, MarLIN is a really useful website for british species. According to them, flounder have their eyes on the right side of the body (like this one does) and the colours look right. Flatfish are always a real pain to ID correctly at the best of times though because they all look the same!

Re: Unknown Flatfish

APC. The Flounder (which i agree is on the photo) is a member of the pleuronectidae which includes placie and Dab they are all right side up flatfish, like in the photo.

Re: Unknown Flatfish

that is a flounder,,,, taste not as delicate as a dab, and not as firm flesh as a plaice...

Re: Unknown Flatfish

No doubt about that one; but sometimes flounders and plaice are difficult to tell apart. The correct identification is that flounders have a patch of rough skin just behind the head. Plaice don't have this; also plaice have a bony ridge between their eyes.

Actually, sea caught flounders taste fine. It's only the harbour fish that taste a bit strong. I reckon that it isn't the mud which is responsible for the taste but their diet. Most harbour/estuary bottom feeders chiefly eat shore crabs and that affects their taste.
