| | | Sustainable fish Hiya
Now we're getting close to Xmas and thoughts are turning towards food and drink (in vast quantities!), I thought I'd draw some attention to greenpeace's 'A recipe for change'. They are basically rating the major supermarkets on their commitment to sourcing only sustainable seafood, and provide consumer advice what\where to buy with a clear conscience.
a quick web search should get you the PDF file - makes interesting reading, and is easier than trying to learn and remember the status of all our fish!
the 'Good Fish Guide' is also worth checking out for info on individual stocks and is published freely online for guidance.

| | | Re: Sustainable fish Hi I have posted the link for you
Your right its an interesting read, Trouble is all the farmed fish I have tasted have tasted of cotton wool,,,apart from some halibut I got a few months ago. Although I do fancy some of the organically reared trout and carp as per HFW prog, A Recipe for Change | Greenpeace UK

| | | Re: Sustainable fish mmm, carp is a good way to go because they're vegetarian and don't rely on fishmeal for feed. I've been trying to get tilapia to try for ages but every time I get to the supermarket I either forget or it's not in stock...
the fishing industry is something I'm really interested in, and I am currently working on a project re. discarding and it's pretty shocking. the more people know about this stuff the better IMO, and hopefully we can slowly start making a difference. |

| | | Re: Sustainable fish To give an update on this subject. Greenpeace and WWF are telling customers to avoid any fish which isn't certified by the Marine Stewardship Council. What they don't say is that it costs around £40,000 to be accredited with about £1,000 extra annually. This means that the large company owned boats will be able to continue fishing while the little boats which do no harm will be forced out of business as they simply cannot afford to get their fisheries registered.
I fear that those who fish sustainably from small harbours and beaches around the UK are one of the endangered species now.
I will be pleased to supply more detailed information. | | | | Thread Tools | | | | Display Modes | Linear Mode |
