| | | Re: leaping Salmon at Stainforth Force If there's lots of rain you can do a really nice waterfall tour in the area - from Stainforth you can walk up to Catrigg Force, then back down to Stainforth, from there you need to drive down to Settle and then take the back road to Kirby Malham stopping at Scaleber Force on the way. From Kirby Malham go into Malham and either drive or walk to Janet's Foss and Goredale - you wont see any Salmon at any of them but they are fine waterfalls. I've got photos of most of them in the Northern England part of the Gallery.

It was awesome! There were stacks of them 'at it' and plenty of big ones too. It is well worth a visit. The Ribble was quite swollen today, which helped them up!
I urge people to go and see this fabulous spectacle!
Regards, Chris | i took my 2 kid's to these falls on 15/10/11 and they absolutely loved watching the salmon leap up the fall's,cracking weather as well!

| | | Re: leaping Salmon at Stainforth Force My wife and I visited Stainforth Force on the 23rd and 24th Oct 2011 to watch the salmon leaping. Not seen salmon leaping before so the first day spent 4 hours watching them and about 1 hour the second day.
The water was fast flowing and the weather sunny. We got told by an avid camera man that not many salmon were jumping compared to the week before, but for a couple of first timers we saw approx 30 salmon and well happy with that.
We will return next year I would think and watch this fascinating wonder of nature. |

| | | Re: leaping Salmon at Stainforth Force Just got back (about three hours ago) from a weekend at Stainforth to see the salmon. I thought I was going to be disappointed as there was nothing doing on Saturday. There was a lady who'd been watching for two or three hours when I arrived and hadn't seen anything. I gave it two hours myself without any luck and then took a walk up to Cattrig Force. I'd like to see the salmon that could leap that!
Saturday was damp, and I think there must have been even more rain over the hills as by Sunday morning the Ribble was running higher and the fish were jumping. They are a nightmare to photograph, though. I've come to the conclusion that you really need 1/1000th of a second or better, and preferably at least f8 as you never know where they're going to leap. Those settings mean the falls have to be in full sun and even then you'll probably need to up the ISO. I was shooting mainly at ISO 400, 1/250th to 1/400th of a second and either f5.6 or f8. Out of a couple of hundred shots, these are the only three that (just about) reach the Gallery standard...
Fantastic to watch, even if the photographs could have been better!
