| | The pond is complete! The garden pond is complete! Yes! We've been making it for about a month, and it's been worth it, despite the back-ache and muddy footprints all over the place. There were a few issues along the way. After putting in some water, we realised that the planting ledge was much too small so we had to fold back the plastic and dig some more! Now we have a couple of issues with it not being quite level but it looks really great. My mum and I went plant shopping yesterday and bought some things for the bog garden around the pond and some for in it-- as well as a water lily and other classic-but-not-exactly native plants, we got some indiginous ones as well to benefit the wildlife. Already we have lots of pond beetles investigating, and the other insects are making the most of it too. I'll see if I can put some photos up! I'm really pleased with it, and look forward to seeing tadpoles and dragonflies next year! |

| | | Re: The pond is complete! We've put a new plant in today and filled the pond a little more. The water lilies have grown immensly-- they were quite far under when we first put them in, and within days they were touching the surface. New wildlife has moved in: a strange little newty thing with feathery gills, and a huge Great Diving beetle, plus scores of Whirligigs. A beautiful lime-green dragonfly came over to see us today-- it kept landing on rocks, bits of pond liner, grass, etc. and touched the substances briefly a couple of times with the tip of a curved tail, before flying to the next spot. Don't they lay eggs underwater? If so, what else could it have been up to? |
