| | | Re: oxygen weed You can't really have too much oxygenator, but it's probably a good idea to thin it out occasionally. Just drag it out and leave it by the side of the pond, where critters can find their way back into the water, for a couple of days, then compost it. Do you know what species it is?

| | | Re: oxygen weed Im assuming you mean canadian pond weed Elodea sp, what problems is it actually causing? its not a bad thing have lots of oxygen in the pond, some ponds are swamped with it and it has little effect, it can add nitrates like all plants and if growing to much can cause problems, however if there isnt any problems just lots of weed best left or if you want rid of it as Tursiops2 has said leave it on the edge of the pond or pick out anything living in it. |

| | | Re: oxygen weed Hi,
We lost most of our fish due to too many oxygen plants, nearly all of the advice was "the more oxygenators the better, the more plant cover the better, keeps the water clear ".
It was only when we found the orfe and koi dead that we were told that oxygenators take the oxygen out of the water at night, and you must have a pump running.

Max. | Yes plants like all living organisms respire which requires taking up oxygen. This of course continues through the day, but during daylight the plant is making food through photosynthesis, which gives off oxygen as a by-product, so that the net effect is more oxygen is released than is taken up by respiratory processes. So pondweeds only oxygenate during the day! |
