| | | Rainbow Trout Iv been fishing most of my life mainly coarse but i saw a strange fish the other morning in the River Derwent. The first thing that was strange was the fact i could get so close to it. The second was It looked like a rainbow trout apart from it was pure silver and deep blue. Quite a nice size fish. I know there are alot of brown trout in there although rainbows have been stocked in other areas. Is it just a strange Rainbow or something else? |

| | | Re: Rainbow Trout Hi dogghound,
If it didn't have the red stripe, I'd suggest sea trout or salmon, as it didn't scoot away more likely salmon, sea trout are very shy, not knowing the Derwent I couldn't say if it's a game river or if they've been stocked, but the river bed doesn't look like a game river, possibly a brownie but not by the colours you've supplied.
Well that doesn't seem to have narrowed it down much !.
Max.

Max. | The photo was taken in a shallow backwater just off the main flow, think this fish was relaxing out of the flow, the bed is sandy/gravel and mud in parts, such a large river different parts are game some are coarse. Pretty sure it isnt a brown trout to silver and different markings |

| | | Re: Rainbow Trout Hi again,
Ok, I'd have to say salmon, a sea trout wouldn't let you near it, they fade away into the background.
Hurry, three lobs on a No 2

| | | Re: Rainbow Trout It is without doubt a rainbow trout. There is a variety called a blue trout, that doesn't have the red stripe, which is stocked in some fisheries for it's novelty value (I don't know how they make rainbows blue but they do).
Spot pattern, fin shape and mouth size all say it's not a salmon. It also appears to be about a foot or so long, which would be a tad small for a salmon.

| | | Re: Rainbow Trout it is a blue trout which is a strain of rainbow trout, you can tell it is a stockie by the condition of it's tail and fins.
blue trout also have blue eyes and are quite an attractive fish but normally you wouldn't be able to get so close, i would suggest there is something wrong with this fish. |

| | | Re: Rainbow Trout Cheers everyone. I wasnt sure it was a salmon because of the heavily spotted back. It did look in good condition although i got close. Strange fish to be in a river maybe the flooding has helped it escape from somewhere | | | | Thread Tools | | | | Display Modes | Linear Mode |
