Allis Shad

I cannot remember when or nowdays if there is still a run of Allis Shad up the
river in the Forest of Dean area

What river is it?

Allis shad Alosa alosa i think the only spawning site is in the Tamar Estuary near Plymouth. There is possibly a spawning population in the Solway Firth area and possibly the Severn catchment. They are a rare species and occur in south wales and cornwall/devon i think, so not a million miles away.

There is a big run of allis shad in the Wye and Usk (tributes of the Severn). My brother caught one on hook and line in West Bay harbour near Bridport, Dorset so they turn up in plenty of other places too - just not in any sort of number. Unless.....doghound is right and I'm thinking of the twaite shad?
