| | | koi carp i woke up this morning about 6ish and on the way to the loo i looked out my landing window to look out to my pond and saw a koi laid next to the pond so i ran out to the pond and picked up the fish which at the time i thought was dead but i saw a movement in one of it's gills so i held it in the water next to the water fail to get so oxygen in it's body which over the next 10 to 15 mins it started to impove so i am not sure whether it jumped out of the pond or it was one of next doors cats having a go again?Had a good look at it but did'nt see any scars on it so i think i might have just just out of the water? I keep going out to the pond and it seem allright at the moment so fingers crossed. |

| | | Re: koi carp Carp can last several hours out of water, aslong as they are moist although i would not advise you test that theory, the fish possibly just jumped out of the pond, they do this for some bizarre reason although nether witnessed it with natural fish. Lucky the local cats never found it. |

I kept koi for several years until the last 18 months or so and from my experience they will jump for various reasons ie a change in water chemistry, an irritation on the skin, something may have frightened it and made it jump. You did the correct thing by placing it near the water outlet, and as there were no marks on it, then it is highly likely that it jumped rather than something attempting to catch it. (Just for info, when handling any fish, you should wet your hands first.) Whether it fully recovers or not, only time will tell, but from what you say, so far so good.
As for the possibility of lack of oxygen, all koi should have an air supply into the water all year round and it is critical to have extra air being pumped into the pond during the summer months. Although a waterfall will suffice in the colder months, it is not adquate for koi during the warmer months and an air pump with air stones in the pond should be added.
I personally know someone, and have heard of it several times, where they have lost practically all of their koi over one night through lack of air being pumped into their pond - they quite innocently had no idea that koi in particular require this extra air. The larger ones suffer/die first as their requirement is greater. So please add that extra air, they really do need it

| | | Re: koi carp i have got a fountain and a frog that spits water back into the pond which i have running over the summer months. All i can think off is that the day before i moved a lot of my marginal plants around and repoted some and the water got quite dirty so maybe that might have something to do with it jumping out?Yes i did wet my hands before handling the fish as well which i find very important.
Thanks for your adivce on the air stone i will look into that. | | | | | Thread Tools | | | | Display Modes | Linear Mode |
