| | | Re: koi carp That's a good shout about the air stones and pump. My Koi were lurking at the top of the pond and apparently gasping a little a couple of years ago and my local fish store suggested the same remedy. It seemed to do the trick and touch wood no more problems since.
I also had a similar fish jumping experience last summer and just rescued it before a curious bird could investigate any further! The fish was on the patio next to the pond and the bird was moving in. I didn't see the fish jump out but presume this was the case rather than anything taking it. It is now fine and you wouldn't know it had ever been out sunbathing Glad yours is sounding like it is doing well and hopefully it will stay that way |

Another reason can be a problem with water quality, again this is the time to keep an eye out for this as more food is added and more waste produced. Test kits are good value for money; I test for PH, Ammonia, Nitrite and nitrate.
It's always a good idea to clean some of the rubbish from the bottom of your pond in spring, especially if you have pond plants as these could rot and cause problems. You should be OK as long as you don't have a thick layer of sludge in the bottom.
I know that you have a pump and filter, this will probably rule out a lack of oxygen. You could still have a problem with water quality if the pump was turned off over winter or the winter temperature was cold enough to kill your bacteria. |

i agree with what mick has said above , although i have a ghost carp (very large ) that has jumped in the past, i think it was irratated by the tap water when i did too large a water change but i have seen him jump on accasion and ive had him 3 years now with no ill effects. I would just keep an eye on them and look for signs of the fish flicking or flashing ( rubbing its body on the bottom in short sharp turns) . If they do its likely to be an irratation that has made him jump. Carp do jump accasionally so it may be nothing at all .
regards

vic | hi thanks for advice i will keep an eye on him,the other problem ive got with the pond about 3 weeks ago i put clover leafd in pond as it became very murky with algae that cleared but since we have had the warm weather and plenty of sun the pond became dirty looking again so i got some pond clear which didnt last long its now murky again ive got a good pump and a bio 5 filter box so i cant understand why i only see the fish if they are near the top where as in the winter months it was so clear that i could see right to the bottom the water is tap water clear but there must be a lot of muck at the bottom ive tried to cleasr with a net but still not clear what can i do someone told me it could be the filter box and if i had a different one i could put some sort of "rocks of some kind to help with problem" any advice |

(Just for info, when handling any fish, you should wet your hands first.) Whether it fully recovers or not, only time will tell, but from what you say, so far so good.
As for the possibility of lack of oxygen, all koi should have an air supply into the water all year round and it is critical to have extra air being pumped into the pond during the summer months. Although a waterfall will suffice in the colder months, it is not adquate for koi during the warmer months and an air pump with air stones in the pond should be added.
I personally know someone, and have heard of it several times, where they have lost practically all of their koi over one night through lack of air being pumped into their pond - they quite innocently had no idea that koi in particular require this extra air. The larger ones suffer/die first as their requirement is greater. So please add that extra air, they really do need it
Linda | hi linda you mentioned air stones in pond are what are they attached to? ive a bio 5 filter box and a good pump would i need airstone? i have a tropical fish tank indoors and i have a air stone in that is it the same principal but as i posted on this page my pond is very murky and i cant solve this problem jeanne |

| | | Re: koi carp Reading all above (plus the reading of advice given to me) has confirmed that I had probably lost my carp through the combination of them jumping, irritation and tap water. Back then being complete novice to taking care of fish and ponds.
Marktench I hope your koi carp is still doing fine.
