| | | Re: starting an aquarium Planted aquariums are what I like. Again just with a few fish (of captive bred species). Can be tricky to maintain though particualrly with regard to maintaining a steady ph and keeping an eye on the CO2 which kept running out before I'd notice (thereby giving me PH problems) and in the end I was struggling to do it justice so got rid of the tank.
I did enjoy it and may go back into it when I'm a little old lady with no other pets and more time!

| | | Re: starting an aquarium Unfortunately with the fish I have there is no chance of any plants surviving more than one day.

| | | Re: starting an aquarium Yes, nobody told me that when I kept cichlids, soon found out though . I also had a few clown loaches, I know what you mean re thinking their dead.
My favourites though were tiger barbs, they were such thugs, cruising 'round the tank looking for trouble. Always put me in mind of those latino street gangs you see on the telly, all they needed were teeny tiny flick knives & to look the part .

Actually found my planted tank very little timewise to maintain, other than trimming plants, my co2 seemed to last a good while....the nano tanks look like real fun.. |

| | | Re: starting an aquarium I used substrate to planted aquarium and I think I definitely could've done with a larger CO2 tank.
I know what you mean though, I have all of Takashi Amano's nature aquarium books (if you've not seen these you really really need to ) and the small tanks look awesome - but of course the smaller the body of water the harder it is to maintain stable water parameters.

there is a massive marine fish tank that appeared in PFK around the same time
