I saw from a later post that you have found a home for some but am hoping you may have some more!

I've been giving away the previous years fry for years now, and this year will probably be no different. It's far too early in the season at the moment. The fish in the main pond are just coming out of their winter state. When they spawn in the summer I'll drain the fry pond ready for this years tiddlers, and then I'll be looking for some new homes
What precautions have you taken to stop the heron? There are some simple and effective ways to stop them. One thing often overlooked is that a heron can land on lilly leaves if they're faily bunched so a few lengths of fishing line strung across above the lillies will tangle them up and prevent them landing (without hurting them).
In my two wildlife ponds the frogs and toads are now gathered in their hundreds ready for spawning. As soon as the tadpoles appear so do the herons. I'm told they feed their young on them. Again, a few lengths of fishing line around the perimeter of the pond at about 6", 12" & 18" will stop them wading in or fishing from the edge (again, without hurting them).
By far the most effective is a tight mesh net, but this is ugly, stops you from enjoying your beatiful fish and can prevent the welcome wildlife from accessing your pond.
Sorry to go on....you probably know all this. Good luck.

Doorframe | All advice gratefully received, so many thanks.
I am using the fishing line trick and have placed around the pond, some lengths of those concertina type fencing, obtainable from Wilkinsons. They are about 18" high and herons can't step over them. My fishing line spans across the pond between the fences. There are two islands in corners, which I have found out the heron lands on to get close to the water, so I've just (today) strung more line diagonally to protect them. One of my fences was broken this morning, caused, I think, by a heron not seeing a line and pulling the fence over at a weak spot. I reckon that particular bird was foiled anyway!
Your offer later in the year is very kind. Thank you.
Regards

| | Re: Free Goldfish In Essex Hi,
I do have an established pond. I enlarged it last summer.
It is 40" deep by about 6 feet long by 4'6" wide.
I had 60 plus fish, mainly goldfish, a few orffe, and 3 common carp which I caught when they were only a few inches long.
All the fish are healthy - I have a pump going continuously pumping from the main pond into a higher smaller (fishless) which then falls back into the lower pond again. I also have a UV light which keeps the water reasonably clear.
The reason I need fish is that I received an unwelcome visit from the heron and he decimated my stock. The pond is now heron-proof and I am working on developing a better method still.
So if I have passed your criteria please let me know. I live in Romford so not too many miles away. I think I could rehome a fair number of fish for you.
regards

New to this; I tried to reply this morning but perhaps did not work.
I have an established pond - Romford based and I am looking for some
goldfish to replace what the heron took. Pond now 100% heron proof.

I am looking for some more goldfish for the communal pond that I look after in a Sheltered Scheme for the elderly, situated in Holgate, Basildon (Felmores.). I have had some heron attacks which have resulted in some serious losses. This was some weeks ago now and the measures I have taken to deter the herons seem to be working.
If your fish are still available, I would be very interested. Please let me know.

I have tried a couple of times to send a message to you but as this site is new to me they may not have got to you.
I have an established pond which is 3 1/2 feet deep by 6 feet by 5 feet approx.
I lost a lot of my goldfish to a heron and wish to replace them. The pond is now 100% heron proof unless he has scissors.
There is a smaller higher pond and water is pumped from the lowre main pond to the top one and waterfalls back after going through my filter and UV light.
I live in Romford so I am not too far from you.
If that is OK please let me know how we can get in touch.
Regards
