| | | Re: 9 Recycling Bins :) A bit of a misnomer: four of these are not bins so they're not stood around outside. One of these is, in effect, a kitchen bin, which most people have anyway. For those who have a garden compost heap, at least three of these are not necessary. Most authorities would collect plastics with the metal and glass. The textile collection is what charities do at the moment and how many people collect large amounts on a weekly basis? So this is down to four essential containers (which could be three if N-u-L collected mixed plastic).
Note the wording in the second para of the article: the Council offers nine containers - nobody has to take them all! |

| | | Re: 9 Recycling Bins :) its not a very good article and would happily feature in the Daily Fail
how many times a year does the average person put clothes out for recycling? we probably once or twice a year drop clothes off at the collection point, yet every few days get real and fake charity collection bags on the door matt .
its now less common to have waste separated down to so many items but it depends on the refuse centre that is processing the items. Here we have a box for card and paper, a box for all plastic and a box for glass and metal. there is also a black wheelie bin and a garden wheelie bin (not used as we compost so its used for storage of fresh compost for the green house), so we must have a fairly modern collection point that continues to sort the items. They dont have the facilities for animal products so we can not collect waste food for collection.
When living down the road in west yorks we had a green wheelie bin for every thing except glass and compost and a black bin for landfill. Glass was up to us to take to the recycling point at the supermarket, same in Exeter. In Bristol Just about every thing was collected in a tiny black curb box as well as a food and a landfill bin. the problem with the size of the box meant many items would probably go uncollected and end up in the landfill bin.
At the end of the day the council is trying, though the article seems to make it look like its tried to hard which is unfair as its down to the resources available at the collection yard.
Its time we joined in with other countries close by in reverse vending and limiting the types of packaging to allow it to happen easily.

I would note the subtle ( ) change from the BBC's 'the council offers' to the Heil's ' Families forced to follow .... diktats'! | | | Re: 9 Recycling Bins :) In Newton Abbot we have:
Black wheelie bin for landfill.
Green wheelie bin for garden waste, cardboard, food waste
Green box for glass; plastic bottles; phones; print cartridges and batteries
Black box for cans, aerosols, paper waste.
Textiles can be left out in a plastic bag
I collect the following in a large plastic bag and dispose of when I travel near the following sites:
Local recycling at B&Q and Tesco will take some of the above but also general plastic containers eg: CD cases, yogurt pots, plastic flower pots, ready meal trays etc, but not thin film, bubble etc.
Also recycling for cartons, tetra pak.
There is also a recycling centre in the town for larger amounts of garden waste, electricals, batteries, wood, metal, household goods etc etc etc
When I was a child every house had one old style bin which took everything. Today, the volume of waste would not fit into that old bin. As consumers we are sold more packaging in an infinite variety of ways. If anyone wishes to have less waste then they should choose the products carefully. If you want apples then why purchase those sold 4 in a pack when you can buy them loose - if you see what I mean.
Recycling in Newton Abbot is positive and improving on a daily basis.

Dorts. | According to your local council, your grey wheelie bin will soon have friends.
