| | | Recycling cans I was watching the re-cycling truck collecting down our street, halfway they drove off but were back a little later. They had to empty the stuff they had already collected and the nice chap I spoke to explained that people were putting out UNCRUSHED Cans which took up an awful lot of space and now they collect plastics the bottles also take up a lot of room unless they are squashed flat and the tops retightened to stop them popping up again.
So CRUSH your CANS and plastic bottles, please

| | | Re: Recycling cans Our plastic bottles are not collected, but we can deposit them at the local tip. However, we're told not to leave the tops on, they have to be discarded elsewhere.
Why can't all the local authorities have the same collecting arrangements? |

Some collectors won't even take metal tops although these are just steel or metal and, you'd think, would go in with the cans? Quote: |

| Because authorities are legally obliged to take the cheapest option, in effect. The situation will probably become worse with cuts ....

when i lived in leeds councils area they collected most things bust glass in a green wheelie bin, this was then compressed as it went round, hence the no glass.
in Bristol every thing but plastic was collected and now in york every thing except food is collected
they have different collection centers they take the waste to so if it is to be recycled they have to meet the requirements of the different collection centers.

.......... | I used to do something like that but it occurred to me that I might be putting aluminium tops in steel cans or vice versa. Since the iron/steel is sorted magnetically any aluminium inside woul go along with the can! |

Very easy to check for yourself with a fridge magnet - but most lids are the same as the body of the can. |

I just chuck metal bottle caps into the "recycling". My council takes cans, plastic bottles, hard plastic food containers (washed) and aluminium foil in one bag/box.
Only the metal and the plastic bottles are recycled.
The glass is crushed for road hardcore, and the plastic food containers (washed with my soap and hot water ) are incinerated. Talk about washing coal before use. Other things that could be incinerated, like kitchen paper, plastic film, laminated cardboard are all sent to landfill. |

Cardboard, plastic bottles/food trays & tin trays/cans all go in the same bin.
I always squash & crush.
