New battery recycling scheme

This was the minister for the environments reply to the battery recycling scheme:~
New laws have set challenging targets on the collection, treatment and recycling of waste batteries. The UK will be required to significantly increase the collection and recycling rate from the current rate of around only 3% to 25% by 2012, and 45% by 2016.
There are already opportunities for recycling household batteries in many areas. Some local councils already collect batteries as part of their doorstep recycling collection, or provide bins at local waste and recycling centres.

We've been able to recycle batteries via the kerbside scheme for over a year now. Larger ones can be taken to the local recycling centre. I noticed that there was a box in Tesco today for the same purpose.

used to be able to get paid scrap value for lead acid batts ie vehicle batts, but now you need a licence to carry them, over 5 used to be, now most places wont pay for small amount even though scrap value quite good, in America they have to pay for the recycling of them when you purchase them,surprised they dont do that here probly wont be long,
