I remember when I first went to Greece in the 1970s (after plasic bags had become a commonplace here) and women used to sell plastic bags on the streets or at the entrances to shops: if you'd paid a few drachmas for a bag, I'll bet you re-used it!

The government did try to do something through the packaging regs a few years ago but unfortunately left such a big loophole that herds of elephants could amble through, so companies just bought in credits rather than make changes to their operations. Other government initiatives have been on a voluntary basis .. so bound to fail.

The trouble with shopping bags is nobody trusts anyone anymore, shop keepers will think you are stealing of course if you shop locally for British produce the shopkeepers will know you and trust you.

When I am in Egypt I see everything put in plastic bags, as a Doggle said about India, if you buy a box of matches they insist on using a small plastic bag

When I lived in Bavaria the supermarkets gave you a choice, paper bags or cloth tote bags .. both recyclable but it is down to government and what they encourage/force supermarkets to do and Europe started two decades before us so we have some catching up to do.

I was shocked when a surgeon took me to his beautiful beach house near Lagos last year as the first 30 foot of beach was covered 100 percent in bottles and bottle tops. I took his quad bike about 5 miles up the beach and it was the same the whole stretch.

The Cape flats near Cape Town used to have a terrible problem with plastic bags; it is not cured, but massively better since they started charging in supermarkets for plastic bags.

In UK most supermarket plastic bags are no bio-degradable, but I think they should be charged for at 20p a time, and people would soon remember to take their own bags.

I can never understand the people you see in supermarkets who pick up one carrot and put it one of those little clear plastic bags, then maybe just two tomatoes and put them in another and so on.

LOTS of carrots or tomatoes I could possibly, in some way, maybe understand. However one or two - beggears belief!

i totally agree with this..plastics bags should be banned as they are very dangerous.....
the ifnromation provided is really useful and i hope by this some action can be taken in order to bann the plastics bags
