| | | Prince Charles speaks out on threat to marine life from plastic Now, I am not a Royalist and sometimes Prince Charles does come out with some strange comments but on this I think he is spot on. Prince Charles speaks out on threat to marine life from plastic - Telegraph
I have just come back from a trip down to the Bay of Biscay and northern Spain (excellent .... trip report to follow) but the amount of plastic and other rubbish that I saw, particuarly in the Englsih Channel, was disgusting.
Many of our beaches and rivers also provide ample evidence of Britain's "throwaway culture".
The article mentions Sainsburys only providing plastic bags on demand. This was also my experience at Tescos yesterday and more and more people do seem to be taking their own bags to the supermarkets.
However, this is only part of the problem when you see the amount of wasteful packaging that surrounds our shopping and other items.
I guess individually we can only do our bit and hope that increasing awareness will mean that more individuals do their bit.

| | | Re: Prince Charles speaks out on threat to marine life from plastic Good on Prince Charles. I hope he monitors what way produce is brought into his homes. Plastic bags, in my opinion, should be banned. Other nations are managing perfectly well without them and we did once, before the hand-outs started.
Most stores and shops have material ones that squeeze down nicely for easy carriage.
This is not rocket science and once folk get used to the idea of bringing a bag out with them to shop with, there is absolutely no need for these awful 'killer bags'.
The stores must then work hard on reducing the amount of packaging. Once again, we did without all this plastic around veggies etc years ago and veggies haven't changed since I've been around.
Some shocking pictures of turtles, birds and mammals should be shown in supermarkets to show why they are being removed.

| | | Re: Prince Charles speaks out on threat to marine life from plastic Prince Charles is great, at least someone from the Royal Family is not scared to form their opinions.
I think he gets a lot of bad press but I have always thought his love of the countryside to be a bonus.
GM, Organic, Sustainable, now Plastic, good on him.

But its good he is speaking out against all the plastic and rubbish that is dumped at sea and in the environment as a whole and about GM crops...Will anyone listen.. |
