| | | Cleaning up after your dog I was walking through the woods between Birnam and Inver on Friday and I could not believe the amount of dog mess bags that were thrown under bushes or trees or even hanging from trees , do people really think this is helping the environment . If you are out in the countryside and it`s not in the middle of a path then surely it`s better to leave it , and if you do have to scoop and there is no bin handy then carry it until you can bin it . I would rather stand in a dog muck than look at one hanging from a tree .

There is a little like wood to walk through at the end of our road with a dog poop bin on a lamp post maybe there should be more of these about.

| | | Re: Cleaning up after your dog I remember sitting on the beach as a kid building sand castles and dogs off a lead with there owners walking nearby letting the dog wee and poo on and near where I was playing!
Even worse was when I was in a playground in a park with the kids my mum looks after and a dog owner let her dog poo in the play gound. When I asked if she was gona pick it up and that it could make kids go blind shes shrugged and replied "I dont have any kids" and walked off
But its important to remeber alot of dog owners are very good dog owners. I personally think there should be set areas in every area for dog walking and others where dogs arent allowed (where children play) or atleast have to be kept on leads (for the benefit of wildlife). |

| | | Re: Cleaning up after your dog It's terrible, I agree. I own two dogs, always clean up after them and don't let them go into childrens play areas. I've also carried dog poo bags quite a distance untill reaching a bin. It doesn't take that much effort really and I get very annoyed seeing poo bags thrown into bushes and trees. |

| | | Re: Cleaning up after your dog Perhaps need more bins. It is a bit scary these days telling people they have done something wrong!! It is strange when most people know about dropping litter that they leave the poo bags around, or perhaps they are the same types that drop litter. I don't like to see dog poo in the countryside because of potential danger to wildlife from diseases and worms. Good owners take it home. |

| | | Re: Cleaning up after your dog I used to work on a Council run Country Park, and one of my duties was to strim down some of the footpaths and amenity areas. Dreaded it, dog mess everywhere. They would travel for miles to empty their dogs here, and the majority would leave it were it was. Dog bins everywhere, so no excuse.
Worst still, i was not permitted to confront anyone, as this may stop that person from using the Park in future - Whoopy!!! I did'nt give a monkeys i they ever came back. Lost my rag on several occasions, even offered to drown one bloke in the Lake, as i stood there virtually covered in the muck |

| | | Re: Cleaning up after your dog I was thinking the same thing only this weekend. Took our 7yo son out for a walk on a local disused rail track, and saw several bags hanging in trees. I suppose you could look at it that they are abiding by the signs which say "Please clear up after your dog" - they are clearing it up, just not disposing of it responsibly. My guess it they are observed by someone passing by to pick up the offending item, then when the coast is clear they deposit it to save carrying it home!
Its such a nightmare trying to constantly look ahead of our son to warn him about these "hazards", we rarely enjoy footpath walking any more. He's just joined the Beaver Scouts and they walk a lot in the area, so its only a matter of time before he finds some when we aren't there to remind him.
My brother was a local authority dog warden about 8 years ago, and it was his job to enforce the fouling rules. The excuses he had given why people had not picked up could write a book! |

| | | Re: Cleaning up after your dog It seems to be a widespread problem. On our sites the majority of people do pick up their dog poo and put it in the bin, but several people chuck the bags in the bushes. I have even follwed one person who bagged their dog poo walked for about a hundred metres before chucking it in the next patch of bushes. You do have to wonder about these people sometimes. If they can be bothered to pick it up (which you should do) why can't they take it to the nearest bin. Personally I'm glad of it winter when I take my dog out as a full poo bag makes an excellent handwarmer

| | | Re: Cleaning up after your dog I like to think I am a responsible dog owner - as are all the people I know and meet most days, but you do get to know the ones that never pick up and could not care less.
These are the ones that give dog owners a bad name, there are the ones that just drive on to car park and let the dog out to empty and sit waiting for it to come back, then the ones that walk down the path 20 yards till the dog has done it's duty, quick about turn, off home. It's the same people all the time and yet they get away with it, off course there are the ones that even tell you that no way are they going to pick up after their dog!
The kids do occasionally empty the dog bins - throwing the bags everywhere.
Unfortunately some people are not willing to do a little bit for the environment - they are all take out.
Not a lot you can do about it - they do not need a dog, they will foul the countryside with something else. Cans, bottles, cartons we have all seen it.
Just my thoughts - Most owners are very responsible about their dogs.

I really don't understand a dog walker going through the motions of bagging up just to relocate it about 10 metres. That shows tremendous disrespect for your area (or someone elses!). Its a shame we can't employ people to watch out for this, then follow the perpetrators home and throw it into their garden (and fine them heftily of course, for both leaving dog mess, and normal litter).
On the point of leaving it, I'd rather it was left in the middle of a path than hidden in the grass where some unfortunate child or animal may come 'face to face' with it.
Hmm, perhaps potential dog owners should have to go through the same sort of process as potential child adopters, to make sure they are responsible and trustworthy. |

I have to agree with september:- "Hmm, perhaps potential dog owners should have to go through the same sort of process as potetial child adopters, to make sure they are responsible and trustworthy."
This would clear up an awful lot of problems, but the irresponsible wouldn't bother anyway, they'd still get their hands on dangerous dogs, but as usual the poor dog get's the blame.
I've used the wrong word "dangerous", er, can't think of a better one, perhaps "untrained" is nearer the mark, anyway it's the owners in most cases that need training.
Max.

Some people are not responsible and unfortunately are not fit to keep fleas let alone a dog or child. I am sorry if this seems a bit blunt but that what I see happening around me.
The term I would use to describe these people is selfish - the first to cry if anything goes wrong - yet they do nothing to help prevent it or to help the environment.

Carol. | I agree, I see it every day. I have to try and keep calm about it as there's nothing I can do about it but I occasionally blow . I once had strong words with a woman in a park who let her young Rottweiler foul right next to a kiddies play area. Her excuse was the dog wasn't yet toilet trained. I don't think anything could have sounded so stupid. It doesn't matter how old the dog is, young or old, big or large, you pick it up. The dog doesn't have to be toilet trained, correct term, house trained and even if they were that would actually mean they were doing it outside and not in the house. Anyway, typical chav, I got some foul language my way as she clearly couldn't think of anything more intelligent to say . |

the others (majority). I would not like to carry a bag around with me
so how about getting photos and asking for a bin to be located in the hot spots

Carol. | Spot on Carol. I also agree that there are not enough bins and that kiddies play areas should be fenced off or that there should be areas set aside for dog exercising. I also know that kids sorry young adults do remove the bags and scatter them liberally around. We also had a spate of the bins being set alight, now that's nice
Does any one think that bringing back the dog licence would make a difference? I'm not talking about a cheap one as it used to be, but something like £50 a year. It would at least stop some people getting a dog who can't afford to look after them. Just my own thought.

BWD | All children's public play areas are supposed to be fenced off under the health and safety regs.

And this is one of the many reasons why !!!...MAKES ME FURIOUS.
Where is the mentality in hanging it from a tree? as stated before id rather you LEFT it if you really have to be that lazy as now its in a plastic bag its never going to biodegrade and is left to wardens and volunteers like myself to deal with your dogs mess???...do they feel they have done "correctly" by picking up the dog mess and bagging it...and then hang it on a tree just to prove they have done it?...Clearly...dog mess is horrible...so horrible infact that dog owners responsible for having a dog in the first place dont want to carry it a short distance to bin it correctly or even take it home to their own bins?...
If you cant change nappies...dont have kids.
If you cant deal with the horrbile mess they leave, dont have a dog.

It appears to be a minority of dog owners in my experience that do not seem to care about what their dogs leave behind. I dont think you can lay the blame with all dog owners and certainly not the dog. | |
