| | | Slug pellets I prefer to keep all chemicals out of the garden. I have learned to live with slugs and snails. There is a link here for 'Safe Slug Pellets'. Has anyone any experience of them. I shan't be buying them, but if you have to, then perhaps these are a better option ...... The Organic Gardening Catalogue

| | Re: Slug pellets So pleased that there are others out there that don't use slug pellets. I think they make up a good balance in the garden. So what if they eat some of your plants, if you plant enough of them, there will be enough to go around and make your garden look pretty! You can always distract them too, by putting something else nearby that they enjoy more than your plant (I don't even bother with that - but then I don't have any hostas in my garden LOL). Cute little things with their boggly eyes anyway.

Keith. | Hi, Although I would not use them, a question - Are they specifically targetting slugs or does it infact kill anything else. Or are these pellets just a detterent? Cheers

The slug pellets we've all been waiting for. Safe for children and pets, birds, Hedgehogs and other wildlife - killing only slugs and snails.
After remaining effective for several weeks in both wet and dry conditions, the pellets based on ferrous phosphate will break down to iron and phosphate nutrients as part of garden soil.

Keith. | So NOT safe for slugs and snails. They are trading under false pretences calling them SAFE.

| | | Re: Slug pellets As I've said before, I wouldn't use them. I suppose they're 'safe' if they only cause a stomach upset but not kill you ! I just would'nt trust them.
Anyone who wants to photograph slugs and snails can come to my garden. I can find plenty, we have this understanding that as long as they don't munch too many plants, I'll leave them alone and they only have to run the gauntlet with the Blackbirds!
They have it easy now, as in previous years we had a Thrush as well !

| | | Re: Slug pellets Copper tape is best, it gives the snails and the slugs a little electric shock when their slime touches the metal - but it doesn't hurt them too much and doesn't kill them. |

| | | Re: Slug pellets Boots brought out a "safe" slug killer years ago , it never really caught on. Something safer would be a really good thing, but to make a real difference it would have to be economically viable to make it attractive to commercial growers who use Tons of slug pellets along with all the other chemicals. |

| | | Re: Slug pellets Yes the copper tape works very well. I have saved several plants with it, and its good for things in pots. Otherwise the only truly effective way is to go out at dusk with a torch and pick them off and put them somewhere else a long way off I used to spend heaps of money on safe slug deterent which was supposed to keep them away from plants and it didn't work. Sprinkling ash works a bit but you end up with very dusty plants... |

| | | Re: Slug pellets I hate it when people use slug pellets. To be honest I think they should be banned. I's all about garden vanity in my eyes. If nature was left alone there would be plenty of natural predators around to deal with them. I never use them and I've had strong words with certain family members of mine that do. Safer, new products have to better than the original but I advise anyone to leave them alone. Good sign of progress though. |

| | | Re: Slug pellets hi i must add, years ago befor i got into gardens my mum had slug pellets she always used them every year, till i showed her the results of what they did,has anyone on here seen a slug or snail after they have eaten a slug pellet, not a nice thing to whitness and i was only a kid at the time,it looks a long slow death and they bubble up with foam while they are still alive, looks like they have fell in a bowl of acid,so no i do not agree with them atall and yes they should be banned, thats my thoughts any way. | | | | Thread Tools | | | | Display Modes | Linear Mode |
