I personally use a wide mouthed polycarbonate _drinking_ bottle. Secure, unbreakable, hygienic, and when you're thirsty you can have a good glug on it, rather than sucking desperately to get a few ml at a time on a bladder tube.

MacPac retailers seem to be a bit thin on the ground round me (for anyone else interested, lists of retailers can be found here: Find Macpac - Retail Locator | Macpac). Lowe Alpine is stocked in Go Outdoors (where I've spotted a girly pink one and that has got my interest).

| | | Re: What is a good make of Rucksack? A former employer issued MacPac rucsacks and I have to say they did the job - carrying all sorts of heavyish, angular stuff. These replaced an earlier issue of a daybag from Arktis that could be added to with zipped on side bags - not supplied.
I still have and use this bomb proof bag, when it's not bulked out the side zips can be closed and the volume reduced but still keeps a nice compact form. |

| | | Re: What is a good make of Rucksack? If you want a waterproof bag, I've got one of these and a bigger one:
I use it for day trips in the hills with photographic gear. Waterproof rucksack - Gourdon 20 - Trekking Outdoor Gear Shop - Alpkit
Alpkit is always worth checking out for outside gear - it's cheap, quite good and the price you see is the price you pay.

| | | Re: What is a good make of Rucksack? Hi Deb,
If it was purely a day sac then I'd go for something small - around 25 litres or so. However and If I had only one sac this is the one I'd have Lowe Alpine Daypack - Snow Attack 35 - Save 40%
I'm a hillwalker and climber and would suggest you look at this and other winter rucksacks - they have attachments for all sort sof goodies and these can have multiple uses. This is the one I use for winter day walks and also for bivvying overnighters
It has a snow shovel/crampon pouch - which is ideal for talking a litre flask and your sandwiches, space for a water sac if you like them (I do), Ice axe (or walking pole) fastenings and straps at the sides for skis but double for tripods. Above all it's comfy!
