| | | Maps for Walkers I see that the well-known Cicerone guide books are being issued in digital form to go on computers and iPods. Anyone tried them. Not too convenient carrying a laptop on a walk but perhaps the iPod could be useful? Digital Books Information - Cicerone |

| | | Re: Maps for Walkers I'm often looking for alternatives to carrying full maps and I do have an I-Pod, though the screen is rather small. Perhaps an I-Phone would be better, but they are so expensive and I can't see myself ever getting one. I have been weighing up a system of obtaining maps on this website, where you just print off what you need: grough — Up-to-date news and features from the outdoors

| | | Re: Maps for Walkers Although I have a hand held Garmin GPS, I still like the comforting feeling that I get from using and looking at my paper maps. I still take both with me if I'm doing a route I'm not sure of.
I can't see me ever bothering with the above, to be honest.

| | | Re: Maps for Walkers a trusty OS map might be slightly larger then my phone, but its lighter, easy to see a large area in a glance and not liable to power failure.
I often track my walk on the inbuilt gps and take geotagged pictures at points of interest, but im in no hurry to lose a hard copy map and compass

I have to agree here and people thinking about taking up walking should always learn to use a map and compass and carry these with them, as well as their gadgets. I've even go us out of the woods (literally) when in the dark with just a fluorescent compass and a rudimentary knowledge of which direction we were travelling in when we got lost.
Before walking - COMPASS + MAP + ABILITY TO USE THEM (+ torch if there is any danger of being out after dark).
(Sorry to interrupt but I know only too well the dangers of relying too heavily on electronic devices.) |

Tracey | Though maps do occasionally blow away (especially if you are a bit gawmless like me), as I've experienced a couple of times. Thankfully each time I was in areas I knew well.

| | | Re: Maps for Walkers I religiously use the Satmap10 and find it to be excellent. I have recently tried OS on Iphone but it is not so intuitive but I do admit to wearing magazine issued OS and guides now for my most recent walks.
Am doing the Cheviots this weekend. Off from Priory early on Sunday and will kip halfway through the 30 miler on Sunday night. 18 kg pack, so will be fully loaded.
Can't wait.

| | | Re: Maps for Walkers I only wish that when I go walking I didn't have to take two OS maps covering both the Dark Peak and the White Peak. Why can't they publish a map covering the southern areas of one area and the northern area of the other, in effect places that can be easily reached from Sheffield and Manchester? | | | | | Thread Tools | | | | Display Modes | Linear Mode |
