| | | Doing the London Loop alone I've decided to do the London Loop over the next few months, as I want to do more walking and it seems a good way to start, especially as it's broken into several sections. A friend is telling me that I'm insane for doing it alone, especially certain of the sections - she thinks I have a deathwish if I go through Hounslow Common alone, even in broad daylight.
Is my friend correct, or being a little over-nervous about this? She used to live in Hounslow (for 20 years or so) and is seriously concerned I will get hurt. |

| | | Re: Doing the London Loop alone I was responsible for a large open space in the London area and was often asked the same question, 'is it safe to walk across the site?' My answer was that it is as safe as we can make it, but there are no guarantees. The fact that you need reassurance suggests uncertainty and therefore you should follow your head. I would suggest you try and persuade a friend to go with you, which will alay your fears as well as providing support in the event of an injury. If you do go it alone there are simple precautions that you can take to protect yourself; make sure you carry your mobile phone, do not wear earphones when you are crossing isolated stretches and let a friend know where you are going and roughly what time you hope to be home.
Sorry if I have dampened your enthusiasm but personal safety is important. |

| | | Re: Doing the London Loop alone Healfdan, you're right, the warning scared me quite a lot and I'm not going to start the Loop until I have had some time to think, and also get more opinions from other people like yourself who know some of the areas involved. I've been in London for a year, and still don't know most of it, so I'm hesitant to go somewhere that I've been told is a "rape hotspot." I have an Epping Forest route instead for this weekend. |

| | | Re: Doing the London Loop alone Is Hounslow Common the same as Hounslow Heath? There is an ecology/entomology field trip organised there for this month, and I think I might give it a miss!
