| | | Re: Alport Castles - A long route & muddy boots! The West 'arm' of Howden Reservoir, lower than I've seen if for years... The tarmac road alongside of the reservoir soon got boring, so a quick detour down the bank got us onto the 'beach'. (OK, not quite....but near enough! ) Pretty soon, we came to a little inlet that we had to cross. So what's the first thing a man does when you tell him not to go too near the edge because it's deep wet mud??? He ignores you and falls flat on his back, of course!! Then he stands up and slips again! I was too busy to get a photo of that, so these will have to do... and getting washed... ...so I took this while I waited... Once at Kings Tree, we headed North and followed a lane towards Slippery Stones. After a while we came to a ford.... And then we reached Slippery Stones.. After another rest and more food, we were off again and heading NE towards Cut Gate End.After crossing this little footbridge below Little Moor Top, the scenery just got better and better... The bottom of Bull Clough... The views back as we climbed higher towards Cut Gate End... At Cut Gate End, we found a not-so-clear path along to Margery Hill - which would probably be a real bog trot during the Winter.
Trig point on Margery Hill...
More to follow...

| | | Re: Alport Castles - A long route & muddy boots! Wonderful names and beautiful views. I always love the ones with trees and streams
One of them is very like a picture that my daughter bought me - I said I wanted one that was 'green thoughts in a green shade' and that's it... |

| | | Re: Alport Castles - A long route & muddy boots! Smashing trip report Tracey, most enjoyable reading . It must have taken you hours to post that one...lol . Some lovely photos there too, I particularly like the shot of the Fox gloves , one of my all time favorites of the wild flowers. Thanks for taking the time to report back, for us all to enjoy. I really must visit Alport Castles myself one of these days, it's been on my "to do" list for far to long now. I’ll let you know if I can one day find the time to walk this area, maybe you could show me around.

| | | Re: Alport Castles - A long route & muddy boots! Thanks for the nice comments. Muchly appreciated! Lori - walking through sun dappled woods with a sparkling stream running through remains my favourite part of a walk. As it's been soooo hot recently, it's the perfect place to cool off too! Ken - I could have done with a pub on the top of Margery Hill! A pint of cider would have gone down well! Bran - I'm glad you enjoyed reading - and the Foxgloves were just for you, of course!
I'd be more than happy to show you around some time. Just name the day! Shenk - That's a long walk for a 15yr old! Haven't you been back since??
Tracey

It WAS a long way (and we had to run from the top of Kinder Scout down into Edale to catch the train - we missed it and my dad wouldn't come from Barnsley to pick us up and with just enough money[had to reverse charges for the call as well, remember the days before mobiles], we waited 2 hours for the next one to get us back.)
Did quite a lot of walking over that way in those days and the great photos bring back the memories and give the urge to do it again (not so far this time though )
