Smile campervan, retired

I travelled through west Europe and was distressed to be aware of how few birds were to be seen!

Hello jemma, welcome to WAB you should find lots of answers here. When were you travelling? What time of year? Not sure why I am asking.. cos I wont know the answers... but I am sure someone else will.

Welcome to WAB jemma. Where did you go. I did Turkey in September and had in excess of 200 species.

I have done France X 2, Spain X 2, and England X 4XX+ over the last few years and have been amazed at the amount of bird species and numbers I have seen.
It is not always obvious, but if you stop and look "you will find"
just ask the membership for info and you will get answers

I have also done Spain, Turkey, mainland Greece and various islands as well as Majorca and Portugal. I can't recall having less than 120 species in any of those places. As Oscar says, you really have to look to see a lot of species. Driving by and just giving it a quick look probably won't yield much.

Having said that there were areas in Turkey that we struggled in and if you were stuck in a fairly restricted area like that then I can understand why you struggled.

I am still curious where you went though.

Re: campervan, retired

About 20 years ago, I had the privilege of making several trips to East Germany before reunification (not birding trips, more sort of semi-official "cultural" visits). Each time, we drove almost non-stop from the Channel to the East German border, and hardly saw a single bird. As soon as we got over the border though, the skies suddenly filled with Buzzards, Red and Black Kites, and Harriers (Montagu's, I believe, + the occasional Marsh). Everywhere you looked there were up to a dozen birds in view at any one time. Quite spectacular. They disappeared PDQ if you stopped to look at them though.

I wonder if it's still that good?

Hi Jemma.

That must have been very dissapointing for you,it's quite a mystery. I'm

going to Portugal (Eastern) next week birdwatching, so I'll be in bits if I don't

see anything. I'm really hoping to see a Hoopoe as we don't get them in

Ireland. My husband saw one in Italy last year but I wasn't with him that

morning and I'm listening to him since going on about how beautifut it was.

Anyway here's hoping.

Slán.

Hmm, my understanding is that they shoot anything that moves in the Iberian peninsula!

The answer may be due to the fact that the original starting post was in 2006 !!!
