I just need to complete the Scarborough to Filey section, probably in January 2011 and that's the Cleveland Way completed, if only done in stages. |

Ravenscar is a really interesting place to visit. Not much there to see, but you could be surprised by it's location and geology. |

| | | Re: Cleveland Way 2010 Whilst in the pub yesterday, having a quite drink. I was thinking what to do for this year's holidays, I'm still doing the double coast to coast, being the main holiday.
But, I was trying to think about a week's holiday to fit in somewhere. I wanted to focus on cycling this year, leaving the walking out for the time being.
I did think of a one way coast to coast, but I'm doing that on the double and I would need to get a train over to Whitehaven, which is not cheap nowadays.
I did think of the Yorkshire Dales Cycle Route, but again I'm going to the Yorkshire Dales on the double coast to coast.
Which gets me to this thread again, I was very tempted to walk the Cleveland Way again. But not having walked for a few months and the Cleveland Way is 110 miles, that I would need at least 8 days, which I could do it in. But, I thought walking is going to be out this year.
I needed something with some mountain biking in it and the Yorkshire Moors would be more than ideal. So, after having a think of the Cleveland Way, I thought that would be ideal cycling trip for a week's mountain bike run.
However, most of the Cleveland Way is on footpaths and cyclist's are generally not allow by law to cycle on footpaths. But, there are plenty of bridleway's, forest tracks, disused rail tracks and quite back lanes to overcome this.
So, I would start at Saltburn, use the NCN 1 route to Whitby, then use the Whitby to Scarborough rail trail. From here, I would go through the forest drive to Pickering, along the back lanes to Helmsley and Sutton Bank. Then on the Drover's Road to Osmotherley, pick up some back lanes to Carlton Bank, use the old jet miner's track to Clay Bank, up Urra Moor to Lion Inn, along Glaisdale Rigg, along the Esk Valley, to Grosmont and back to Whitby.
So, there you have it. Another one for Foxy. So, I need to plot the route onto Memory map. Find out any camp sites along the route and hopefully get a date. |

| | | Re: Cleveland Way 2010 I've a week's holiday next week and thought, if the weather is kind enough for some walking and camping, I may do the moors section of the Cleveland Way. I would start the walk from Saltburn by the Sea to Helmsley, about 60 miles in total.
I did the coastal section in November from Guisborough to Scarborough, which to say, it was rather wet and the beginning of the snow we had, up in the North-East of England.
I've emailed with all of the places, I tend to camp at and everything is fine with them for me to camp.
That is:
Park Farm, Kildale.
Blue Bell Inn, Ingleby Cross.
Hambleton Inn, Sutton Bank.
Then to York for the youth hostel.
I just need to keep a eye on the weather forecast and the sunrise/sunset times. |

| | | Re: Cleveland Way 2010 I'm hoping for warmer milder weather next week, at the moment, it is freezing cold and it's -4c outside. Not good for camping, anyway, I'll see on Saturday.
I could always head to Whitby for 3 days and do some walking around there, in fact, maybe the better option.
I can always do the Cleveland Way sometime in the summer. |

| | | Re: Cleveland Way 2010 I've chickened out of the Cleveland Way, camping trip. Too old, I guess and getting too old for winter camping (never)
No, seriously, I did fancy 3 days in Whitby, staying at the youth hostel. I've 2 walks planned and hoping to get some decent photos while I'm there.
Whitby is a lovely fishing port and the cod is fresh as you can get it. Plenty of pubs too. |
