Tracey  | Glad you like it Tracey - I think these are sessile Oak - interesting history - they are quite old and prostrate cos of wind on the hill where they are - they are the only ones (about 6 ) left after all the others had been cut down, probably for building timber in local weavers cottages etc in the industrial revolution times, up to about 1850 or so I think.
I suspect they were spared as they are in a very rocky place on the hill, with difficult access - you can see the rotting worn remains of the others on the smoother and lower parts of the hill.
They often used the trunk with very little paring or shaping in main purlins and stretcher beams, so you can see them as quite distorted in some C18 gritstone cottage lofts, although the king and queen posts were usually worked by the carpenter to ensure a good fit for pinning.
If they werent long enough they used an angled slip joint to make the length.
