| | | Re: Coast to Coast Walk (East to West) 2010 A review of the stuff, I had carried on C2C.
Terra Nova Laser Comp - Excellent, kept 100% of the rain out, only downside was condensation.
Vango Ultra 200 Sleeping Bag - For the price, I paid, it was pretty warm.
Sea to Summit 100% Silk Liner - Recommended.
Thermarest Prolite Sleep Mat - Lightweight and comfy.
Go-Lite Pinnacle Rucksack - Very light and comfortable, but you need to pack it carefully.
Rucksack Rain Cover - Must have Item, shrugged off the rain.
Hi-Gear Blaze Stove - Very lightweight, but was let down by it's poor flame output.
Can-opener - Never used, but you never know.
MSR Titanium Kettle - The best pot I've had, super for one-pot meals.
MSR Titanium Cup - I love this for it's lightness.
Alpkit Titanium Spork - Like the Titan Kettle, one of my favorite items.
Light my Fire Steel Striker - Worth it in the rain.
2 x 2 Litre Platypus Water Pouches - This are discontinued and fold into nothing.
Energizer Head Torch - Cheap and very bright.
Footprint Maps - West & East - I also had a guide book, the maps did the job.
Garmin Venture GPS - Never used.
Silvia Compass - Must have item.
Whistle - Again, always carry one.
2 Rubble Bags - I used one for sitting on and one for stand-by.
Notebook + Pencil - I only written only the first day, but handy for taking notes.
Olympus C370 camera - I use this for it is battered to death.
Earplugs - A must have, saves your ears from snorers
Swiss Army Knife - Never used, but again, handy to have.
Mobile Phone - Handy for phoning home or friends. Downside is a lack of signal in the Lakes.
Yha Membership Card - Being a life-member and like to include a couple of hostels, where I can.
2 Metres of Nylon Cord - Many uses.
Small Roll of Duct Tape - Many uses.
Small FM/AM Radio - Good for catching up on the news & weather.
First Aid Kit + Comsped - Must have item and for on-coming blisters.
Knee Support - Never used, always there, just in case.
Insect Repellent - Never used
Wash-Kit - shower gel, toothpaste/brush - Always carry a good supply of gel, to wash away the day's sweat.
Quick Dry Travel Towel - I had the small size, but decided to get a bigger one later on.
Pair of Leki Walking Poles - These are a god-send, great for the knees and crossing becks, bogs. Downside is extra weight, having to keep adjusting them and get into the way crossing over stiles.
Berghaus Explorer Boots - The dog's boll**ks, these were great and had dry socks in wet weather. I had one blister out of 11 days walking.
2 Pair of Thick Socks - Bridgedale and nothing else.
1 Pair of Thin Socks - Bridgedale and nothing else.
1 Craghopper Shirt - This was worn everyday and very comfortable
Rohan Striders - I loved these, very weatherproof, kept the lower legs free.
Rab Aeon Base T-Shirt - Very good and worn everyday.
Paramo Long Sleeved Base Shirt - Worn on the evening for the pub.
Paramo Gilet - Worn on the evening in the pub, one of my favorite item.
Snugpak Poncho - This was great on the 2nd day, kept the worst of the rain off and covered the rucksack.
Montane Featherlite Windproof Smock - Very light and warm in cool wind.
Montane Featherlite Windproof Trousers - Not a one for overtrousers, but these were great for the 2nd day.
Montane Waterproof/Windproof Jacket - Very pleased with this.
Nike Running Cap - Worn everyday.
Buff - Worn a few times, esq on the cool of evenings.
Columbia Titanium Zip-Off Trousers - Worn for the pub, lightweight and comfy.

Hoping next spring my feet's be good enough to venture out, not as exerting as yours, got to start somewhere though. | Well, it is amazing what go's into a 72 litre rucksack and still have loads of room.
When I do my mtb coast to coast, next year. I wouldn't be carrying as much as this, the minimum I guess. |

| | | Re: Coast to Coast Walk (East to West) 2010 Sorry - a bit late in coming across this thread. Thought the kit list pretty good. I'd go more for merino wool base layers but otherwise very similar to what I'd think of using. Well done on your numerous crossings.
My wife gave me a C2C book for Xmas - wonder if she's giving me a hint to get out of the house for a couple of weeks? |

I hear merino wool base layers are very good, but pricey. I would'nt mind getting one for this year's double coast to coast ride trip.
Yes, the coast to coast walk is one I was going to do from east to west this year and have the coast to coast guide book in Waterstones ready to pick up. But, for this year, I'm doing a lot of cycling. So, I'm afraid the walking is taking a backstep for the time being.
However, for 2012, I would like to do the Dales Way and the Cumbria Way, both I have done in the past, but would be lovely to walk again.
I'm planning on doing the Coast to Coast Walk on my 60th birthday in 2016, but that's a long time off. |

| | | Re: Coast to Coast Walk (East to West) 2010 Hi Foxy Happy new Year
A tip: If you use merino or any other wool remember that it dose not just conserve heat,it also generates it when wet, ie when you sweat, the wool gets very uncomfortable against the skin and over a prolonged period, can cause the the same sort of chaffing you would get on a long walk on a hot sweaty summers day.
Its very useful in extreme conditions but allways wear a full base layer of either cotton (my first choice because its breathable and dries quickly under a wool layer) or other suitable but more expensive materials for waring under wool are Silk or Merkalon.
I know from experience that after a hard days exertion the cotton layer under wool stays dry and traps warm air without causing the chilling affect you would get from some other materials. The wool draws the moisture and a good breathable mid layer either wool, fiber pile or a lose weave fleece under a breathable wind proof outer layer will provide protection and ventilation while on the move and warmth when static.
