Well, no responses but I did get tyre liners from a major chain and fitted them this afternoon. Luckily all three tyres came off and went on without incident. They are much thinner than the last ones I had, but allegedly tougher. Time will tell.

I have the Schwable Marathron tyres with a Kelver inside,on my touring bike and recommended. Although I use the Conti Top Touring tyres for cycling to work and never had problems (so far)

You can't help but wonder why more people don't use tyre liners, thanks for all your responses. I managed to get a flat yesterday but think this is a faulty valve issue, I shall investigate. Luckily I hadn't gone too far, just a shops trip. I also got covered in oil when the chain jumped off and lodged between pedal and frame (!) and the new pump I bought from Tesco turned out to be faulty. Luckily I discovered this when it wouldn't pump up said flat outside Tesco and not back home. I've got a couple of these pumps and this is the third time I've exchanged one due to a fault. I've also got a compact pump but have never figured out how to use that one correctly....
