On Sunday, I decided to take advantage of the lovely weather and headed west to Reeth staying at the Youth Hostel in Grinton. I was on the road about 11.30am and Reeth is only about 45 miles from Stockton on Tees, so should take me about a good 3 hours to get there.
I took the route going up the Darlington back lane to Sadberge, going south to Dinsdale, Middleton St George to avoid Darlington, After I soon got to Neasham and Hurworth on Tees which are both on the Teesdale Way. Dropping to the bridge at Croft, I was soon whizzing the miles away to Middleton Tyas and Moulton. I had decided to stop for a pint of Black Sheep bitter at the pub in Scorton, sitting outside in the soaring sun. After 20 minutes, I pushed onto Richmond and bypassed the market place to the A6108 for Downholme Bridge. Here I had plenty of time before the hostel opens at 5.00pm and decide to pop into Elaine's Tea's at Nun Cote Nook Farm, where I camped on my recent coast to coast walk.
After Marske, it was very steep uphill to the outbounds of Marrick. I decided to get off the bike and walk for awhile, the heat of the day was'nt helping either. At the top, I pushed on steadly to Marrick and could see Nun Cote Nook Farm not far away. Along the back road, I was at the farm, sitting down in the porch, drinking a lovely cup of tea and hot buttered scone.
Afterwards, I retraced my way back to the main road for Fremlington, to be greeted by a convoy of about at least 50 farm vehicle's on a afternoon burn-up, that I had to wait and let them past me, because of the very narrow back lanes here in Swaledale. I was soon in Reeth, sitting on the Green, taking in the great views of the valley.
I still had some time left for a quick pint of Cumberland ale in the Bridge Inn at Grinton and sat outside in the warm afternnon sun. This is lovely I thought, better than working in a stuffy supermarket or even shopping come to that. I will have to try and do more of this in the summer, maybe camping on the North Yorkshire Moors, but tonight it's the hostel. Afterwards, I cycled up the ever steep road to the hostel and booked in for the night. Yes it was a good day's cycling.
