| | | Campsites accessible by public transport from Nott'm Hi everyone, I'm a newbie here and this is my first post...
W/out owning a car, I've always found it very difficult to find campsites that are within reach of the local buses/trains. In the distant past, I have always been taken to them, but these days, I prefer to be more self-reliant, but have been limited to the places where I've been before.
Places where I've gone on my own are: Eric Bryne's Campsite, Baslow, Derbys; Edale National Park Campsite, Derbys; Deepdale Campsite, Burnham Deepdale, N.Norfolk and two sites in Betwys-y-Coed, Snowdonia (forgot name). All these places are fairly reasonably-priced and some v cheap and they're all done by bus, then train journeys.
Are there places where you can recommend pls? I don't like really big sites with lots of entertainment where lots of ppl get drunk and make too much noise at night. It would be great if wild campfires are allowed too, but they are in the minority tho'. Also, I'm keen on just the basic facilities with just shower and kitchen areas would be nice, so nothing too fancy as I don't wish to part with too much money! Just wanna go somewhere with lots of unspoilt natural beauty away from the sprawling city of Nott'm where I live...
thanks for any replies in advance xx |

What about Upper Booth Farm, Edale (one of my favourites but no fires allowed) and North Lees Campsite at Hathersage (both places have railway stations but there is a walk to get to Upper Booth if you are carrying your tent!). Also I think there is a tent only campsite near the Snake Pass Inn, Crowdon Campsite (there may be a YHA too), that is on a bus route. Will have a think for a few more

| | | Re: Campsites accessible by public transport from Nott'm I see that you've got a few Derbyshire ones on your list but there are plenty more within reach of public transport (train or bus) at Monsla Dale, Kinder Scout &c.. Can't remember off-hand but I'll get back next week - most can be found on-line. |

The campsite is at the foot of Crowden Clough, which takes you up to the Kinder Plateau. It's also convenient for the Rushup Edge->Mam Tor->Lose Hill ridge walk, returning by train from Hope station.
Don't be tempted to visit Hope - it's a lovely name for a dreary place dominated by a cement works!
The most direct route to the site from the station is to follow the Pennine Way from it's start. It takes you right past Upper Booth.

| | | Re: Campsites accessible by public transport from Nott'm Hello, there is one on the Notts/Derbyshire border, accesible by bus. It is called the Golden Valley campsite, and is near the Butterley Railway Centre. It is a very pretty, small campsite, the Butterley site is a preserved line. You are about 1 hour from Nottingham on the bus. There is a lovely old canal pound within walking distance which is good for birdwatching. Kind regards Gayna |

no open fires i'm afraid but if you can get to llangollen easily enough you can take the steam train to carrog station where there is a campsite on the banks of the river dee.
another one i like is just off the a55 past conwy so should be on a bus/train route. its at penmaenmawr/dwygyfychi and is called woodlands. again no open fires but a beach and some lovely snowdownia countryside around.
try here for some more ideas. it tells you whether open fires are allowed etc: UKCampsite.co.uk - Caravan Sites, Parks and Camping Sites in England, Scotland, Wales, Ireland and Europe
good luck

| | | Re: Campsites accessible by public transport from Nott'm Please if you do wild-camping, don't start a open fire. This is not allowed due to a high fire risk and will only give back-packers a bad name. There is some excellent stoves on the market.
However there is a good campsite at Keld, Upper Swaledale who will let you have a camp fire down by the Swale. |

| | | Re: Campsites accessible by public transport from Nott'm Hi dogstar, I,m nearly always on the move these days, and have visited hundreds of campsites throughout the u.k. There is only one campsite I can recall that allows camp fires, and its in a beautiful place and opened on the 1st of march. Its called Fisherground campsite in Eskdale in the Lake district, £5.50 per nite per adult. Just google campsites-Eskdale for details. A word of warning, DONT go when the bin lids are on holiday, otherwise enjoy! |

| | | Re: Campsites accessible by public transport from Nott'm hey everyone!
many thanks for your advice.. i shall follow up the crowden clough site as it's on the same walk from edale/kinder so that'll be good for me and also the hathersage site. i am aware of the dangers of having a fire and wild camping, i haven't done this very often as most places don't allow this. i just threw in that idea just to see if anyone knew anywhere in particular (there was one site in betws-y-coed that had this and that took me by surprise but it was fortunate as there were midges everywhere that summer!)
i've cut n pasted these suggestions in my 'must explore places'. thank you again for your kind efforts.
