went to the waterside campsite in edale about 3 weeks ago (escaped the rain from the previous night!). the other campsites in edale were fully booked so ended up calling round. waterside was great, altho' being by the stream, made it harder for us to enjoy hanging out at the camp as the midges were everywhere!
thanks kayleigh for the cornwall ones. i've yet to visit, and will certainly check them them out.

| | | Re: Campsites accessible by public transport from Nott'm hello to you all it's been about a yr or so since my original post. i just want to update this with a request to see if you can help me pls.
have decided to take 2 of my nephews (12 and 14 boys) and my 19yo daughter camping this yr. As I live in Nott'm and they live in Cambridge, I would like to go somewhere where there's plenty to do. As someone with not much cash to spare, walking would be my only alternative (tho' that's all I do when I'm camping) but I know that these non-campers may not feel that satisfied in just walking all day. My daughter who's 19 did her DofE Gold a yr ago so she's used to hard trekking conditions so I'm not worried about her entertainment needs. that's my problem no. 1
no. 2 problem is location -
the kids mother isn't that well-off either, and is asking me to make the handover of her kids as easiest as possible. the options are - me take them to North Norfolk and meet her in Cambridge so that all of us can be driven there by her and get picked up. So that'll mean myself and DD will go down on the train to do that (v expensive).
pros: great location, flat, and very beautiful
cons: expensive area, no corner shops for amenities. has two seaside resorts that i can visit - Hunstanton and Sheringham/Cromer - not just for the seasidey resorts but for buying from supermarkets!
the place we're most likely to stay in is at Burnham Deepdale campsite/hostel. it's on the coastal route but only has the local spar/cafe for food shopping.
location no. 2 is PEMBREY, CAMARTHENSHIRE -
sister and her kids staying there for a couple of days in a hotel and is wondering if i could find a nearby campsite for them after sister leaves, and I take them back. Trouble is - (for anyone who knows this area who's been by train and camped there before)
how difficult it is to get there by train/bus from Nott'm?
Can I make the handover on the return journey via Birmingham?
Can the boys enjoy themselves there w/o too much money spent? ie., cheap things to do there?
Is the beach clean/or unspoilt?
location no. 3 - Edale, Dark Peak District
I know I can get there by train, but am not sure about the entertainment idea. There aren't any decent shops where I could get get produce, so it'll have to be the campshop or the newsagent/PO.
problem: not sure whether sister would be bothered to drive max 3hrs to drive us there, so am thinking of her coming over to mine in Nott'm, and I'll have to take them....
There is another problem.. sister has a rebellious, 'unreliable' (her words) 16yo daughter and because of her wayward behaviour she hasn't holidayed with her family for last 2yrs. I've asked her to come and she's agreed, but her mother said that I can't count on her coming as she'll canx at the last minute. My DD is worried if she does come, will she get too bored with all the walking and prob moan all the time. So DD feels that walking areas aren't really gonna be ideal for her as she's so used to fashion, going out and makeup....
yes, i know it's a Tall Order I've got for you all.. I really need some help/input on this as it's a big dilemma atm.. I've got to the beginning of Aug to sort this out... |

have almost decided not to take my sis's kids with us camping as it seems far too much bother for me and my daughter. so daughter and i might just go to st.ives where Kayleigh suggested (thanks kayleigh ). we're thinking of going either in august or after the kids have gone back to school (that way, camp prices might be cheaper off-peak )
went with bf and myself 2weekends ago (when it was really hot n' muggy) and got midgy-fied all w/e - went to baslow, derbys at a campsite with vv basic facilities (no hot water, no shower.. v dirty single toilet/room). it was quite off-putting really, prob. one of my worse camps ever.. the midges were just horrendous, and didn't have any insect repellants until we got into bakewell the next day. spent both nights from about 9 - 11 avoiding them, and went to the pub instead! from the 1st night, our legs and faces were marked noticeably by all their nasty lil' bites so all in all, i'm giving myself a break from camping till the weather's much cooler! | | | | | Thread Tools | | | | Display Modes | Linear Mode |
