| | | Re: where did you walk today? Today was perfect for an all-day walk, but unfortunately I had an appointment at 1pm, so just managed an afternoon walk. I took the path beside the small industrial estate we have in Kensworth, which crossed a valley to join the path around Kensworth Quarry. I believe this is the largest chalk quarry in the country - the chalk is pumped in solution to Rugby, over 50 miles away. The path around the quarry must be at least 3 miles long - as hopefully you can see from the photos, it's not an unattractive walk at all, although there is sometimes a little noise from the quarry. The path from the industrial estate to the quarry At first there is a field between the path and the quarry Having almost completed the circuit of the quarry, this is looking back along my return path to Kensworth (pretty much the opposite view to the first photo)
It was a great walk for seeing wildflowers and insects. There were lots of pyramidal orchids and a few common spotted orchids - the white heleborine I saw a few weeks ago was there but the flowers were all faded away. I was most delighted to find Grass Vetchling here in Kensworth, only the third time I'd found it. And I found some white Herb Robert for the first time.
I've just had a Soldier Beetle identified for me on the Insects forum. There were lots of Speckled Wood and Large Skipper butterflies, and I also saw a Brimstone and a Common Blue. There were a few moths about too, but the only ones I recognised were Six-spot Burnet. |

Lake District (SE)
Wainwrights Outlying Fells of Lakeland
Another fantastic little walk along and below Cunswick Fell and Scout Scar on a day that was alittle too warm for me.
Magnificent views to all quarters.
Regards,
Dave

| | | Re: where did you walk today? Today I did the second half of the Beeches Way in South Bucks, from Stoke Common to West Drayton. The first part of the walk was good, through Stoke Common, the attractive village of Fulmer and the country parks of Black Park and Langley Park, but after that it deteriorated as it reached the built-up areas (the low point was probably crossing the M25 to reach a sewage works). A nice bit along the Slough Arm of the Grand Union Canal, though. Stoke Common Hay meadows near Fulmer Black Park Country Park Lake at Black Park Country Park (I saw a drake Mandarin here) Langley Park Country Park Near Iver Slough Arm of the Grand Union Canal Slough Arm of the Grand Union Canal Grand Union Canal, West Drayton (the bridge marks the end of the Beeches Way)
The undoubted highlight of the walk was getting my first ever photographs of a Roe Deer:
Not sure if it counts as 'wild' as it was by the boating lake in the Black Park Country Park, but this Mandarin is a very handsome chappie anyway:
I found a new moth (new to me that is!), a Nettle-tap: |

| | | Re: where did you walk today? That looks nice Claire. I've walked along the Ridgeway in the opposite direction from Streatley, all the way to it's end at Ivinghoe Beacon. I'd love to walk the rest of the route sometime.
This morning I strolled round the College Lake Nature Reserve. I've posted about it here: College Lake |
