I've never been too keen on canal walks - all the ones I've done have seemed somewhat flat for some reason!

But I must admit they are growing on me, and I decided to do one today just for a change. I'm very glad I did, as in terms of nature sightings it was one of the best walks I've ever done. I'll have to do another post elsewhere to cover the variety of birds and flowers I saw, here I'll just post photos of the scenery.
The walk was about eight miles long, roughly rectangular in shape, starting and finishing at Marsworth (somewhere between Tring and Aylesbury, I was never quite sure whether I was in Herts or Bucks). The eastern edge of the rectangle was part of the Grand Union Canal, the long southern edge was part of the Wendover Arm of the Grand Union Canal, the western edge consisted of paths that were part of the Aylesbury Ring long-distance path, and the northern edge was part of the Aylesbury Arm of the Grand Union Canal, which took me back to Marsworth.

Start of Wendover Arm of the Grand Union Canal

Wendover Arm of the Grand Union Canal - only the first 1.5 miles is now navigable

Wendover Arm of the Grand Union Canal - there is a section in the middle that is devoid of water, though an action group is hard at work to get the canal restored

Wendover Arm of the Grand Union Canal - for most of the way to Wendover, there is water in the canal, but not enough for it to be navigable. It is a long thin nature corridor.

I left the Wendover Arm at this bridge near Aston Clinton (I've previously walked the rest of the canal to Wendover as part of the Aylesbury Ring long-distance-path).

Path near Buckland (the big tree is a Black Poplar - thanks poschiavanus!
