| | | Re: where did you walk today? Today I did a 12.5 mile circular walk from Wendover to Wigginton, returning via Hastoe and Aston Hill. I was close to the Herts/Bucks county boundary throughout the walk, in fact one track I walked down was actually the border.
It was a nice walk, which I've done a few times before (its actually Walk 5 of the Chiltern Chain Walk, an unofficial long distance path I created myself) but it wasn't quite as good as usual, because of the weather conditions - grey, cold and windy. A real come down after three beautiful days for my walks last week. Wendover and the Vale of Aylesbury from Wendover Woods Part of the Ridgeway national trail, in Barns Wood near Wendover The path to Wigginton Pitstone Hill and Ivinghoe Beacon from Wigginton Tring Park and Tring, from King Charles' Ride King Charles' Ride, Tring Park
King Charles' Ride is so-called because according to local legend Charles II used to ride there when he and Nell Gwynne visited Tring Park.
I heard Buzzards a couple of times, but otherwise there were no interesting sightings of birds or mammals. I saw my first Wood Sorrel of the year (not fully in flower), and saw Primroses and Wood Anemones in a few places. |

| | | Re: where did you walk today? Today's walk was up on to the hills near home. The target was to find my first Wheatear of the year (they breed where I walk). I set off from Ogden Reservoir, near New Hey, in Lancashire, following the Piethorne Valley up towards the moors around Foxstone Edge. It was on the climb, by Hanging Lees Res' that I saw my first two Wheatears of the day (I ended up seeing seven in total), two cracking males. There were also three Curlews joy-flighting overhead.
Just before reaching Th' Owd Tup' (a pub officially called The Rams Head), I turned left along the catchwater to reach Norman Hill Res'. Two good birds here, were a couple of Twite. There were also plenty of Skylarks in song today. From here it was a steady stroll back down the valley back to Ogden.
