Dave | There is a genetic element to hypercholesterolaemia - some people with double dose of the hc gene will produce cholesterol whatever they eat. For most other people it's a matter of reducing dietary fats - anyone eating/drinking eggs-bacon for breakfast, unskimmed milk several times a day, fatty meat and chips for dinner with a creamy nightcap will get raised cholesterol and therefore probably atheroma and likely coronaries.
There has long been debate about the meaning of cholesterol (and other lipid) levels in the blood - but it's probably safest to minimise fatty intake. |

| | | Re: High Cholesterol!! I do believe it's a lot to do with genes as well as lifestyle.
I'm 29 and on statins (for cholesterol) and pills for hypertension (high blood pressure). I freely admit I haven't got the healthiest lifestyle but I know plenty of people with far worse. Most of my family have had similar health problems; mother on pills since she was 35, uncle 3 heart attacks & stroke before 50 (he's still going strong!) and all grandparents had heart attacks or strokes.
I have no intention of living my life on a strict diet and extremely healthily - life's too short. To me being slightly overweight and happy is much better than being slim and miserable (and I've been on both ends of the scale )
btw, those benecol/flora pro-active drinks are lovely & do seem to have lowered my cholesterol a bit

| | | Re: High Cholesterol!! http://www.whfoods.com/cookhealthy.php has some excellent recipes. The advice throughout the web site is spot on! (US site).
I hope you can reduce the cholesterol reading by diet alone. Also, don't forget to go back to have it re-checked. You may find that it fluctuates, and could have been unusually high on that day.
All the best.
