| | | It's a bit quiet in here lately..... Thought I better post a little something to see if anybodys about. We've been keeping fairly busy so far this year with 27 walks under our belts so to speak. They've been a bit shorter than usual because I still have a bit of pain across the top of my foot and now an arthritic hip is playing up. Anyway still managing to get out 2 or 3 times a week mainly to the South Lakes.
Hope everybody is keeping OK.
Regards,
Dave |

Waiting for better weather before I get my pack on my back Hope your foot improves soon. As for your hip, when it gets to bad swap it for a mechanical one. My dads got two of them, there's no stopping him now

We were last on Hutton Roof last October and it was great.
My personal favourite though is Whitbarrow,

I'll try out the other places when we next head for the Lakes - could you describe them perhaps?! | Hi there Tufftie. It all depends on how you like your walk really. The places I have mentioned are some of my particular favourites for different reasons. They are either in or near to the Silverdale/Carnforth region and all are set around the limestone deposits indigenous of the area.
I generally walk from one to the other to take in a general array of wildlife, but each place has its favoured species ie Butterflys, Dragonflys or Birds.
The area has a diverse amount of walks available to either a seasoned rambler or the one off day walker, and basically everything a nature study could offer; Abandoned quarries, lakes, vast woodland, crags and hills. It is also close to the sea front overlooking Morecambe Bay and Grange over Sands.
The amount of walks I could recommend would just confuse you. The best way to see the area is to get a local map and set off to explore. I do however hope you take in the Eaves Wood route that takes you over Arneside Knott.
Leighton Moss Bird reserve is in the region and is not a bad starting point for any of the above trails - enjoy! |

| | | Re: It's a bit quiet in here lately..... Thank you for that - sounds well worth a visit at some point ! I'm sure we'll be doing a magical mystery tour that way some time but not sure when - though the Lakes and surrounding areas is somewhere I definitely want to visit again

The Downs all around there are great for wildlife - esp reptiles and some rare plants. Will go into it in more detail tomorrow as a little busy right now. Depends a bit what time of year you were thinking of visiting the area - but cuckmere is good in all seasons
However i'd avoid Cuckmere on sunday afternoons and Bank Holidays

Of course, not the wilderness of the North Pennines or Bowland, but the area has a real sense of character. The moors are a delight (well aren't all moors), with interesting wooded cloughs, eg Hardcastle Crags (NT place), and there are plenty of hillside hamlets to explore, eg Heptonstall and the Saddleworth villages.
But I'd get here quick, before the insidious march of wind farms destroys the area's local distinctiveness for good.
Regards, Chris
