| | | Foot Pain Until yesterday I've not been able to go walking for over a week. I've had sharp, stabbing pains along the the top of my foot.
Visited the A&E department of our local hospital for X-Rays but they showed no damage to bones. The doctor reckons it's a bad case of tendenitis which time and anti-inflammatory gel will eventually clear up.
Anybody else had anything similar?
I did manage a couple of miles yesterday without too much bother but wouldn'tv want to risk it on the Lakeland Fells just yet.

They are by far the preferred choice of theatre staff who are on their feet all day and are fantastic for your feet. I stand up for up to 6 hours in some cases and get no grief at all whereas trainers, or shoes, for example would kill me |

I suppose they were the predecessor of Crocks - I know people who swear by them for making leg pain more bearable.
I haven't seen anyone wearing clogs on the lakeland fells before, I don't think Dave will get too far wearing them - but I have seen idiots in flip flops straight up! |

| | | Re: Foot Pain I also suffer from a similar pain as you describe ..but for me its runs under the foot..I found that wearing a foot support especially when out running really does help..as someone else mentioned that it could be related to scyicatica in the back..I suffer from this due to a fall while out horse riding many years ago..Im sure my foot pain that i experience is linked to this..

Pete,
The foot is slowly improving but not enough to get out onto the Lakeland Fells just yet. I haven't added any walks to the site since the 13th November but I have been doing a few short local walks which are in the "Local Pictures" section.

| | | Re: Foot Pain Great sympathy with you Dave. In the summer I had tendonitis (back of the calf-knee) which I know came from doing a long downhill walk over limestone rubble - walking (carefully) with feet at 45 degree angle, not a usual position. So sometimes you get these various problems just by doing something you're not used to .... can't see that's implied in your case.
A couple of points:
1 I find that you sink into bad habits (walking bow-legged, adapting to your boots (rather than them adapting to you). I now have three pairs of boots which I alternate - partly in response to the weather and conditions but partly to make sure that my feet get some consideration - difficult to explain but makes a difference - I ache in different places when I change boots (which are all perfectly good fits and comfortable).
2 I get different pains depending on where and how I'm walking. Doing a lot of steep uphills I get serious lower back ache (I suspect this is because I lean forward and thus put strain on the lower vertebrae) but general, after a long walk, it's my calf muscles that go - and the ache can linger for some days. On the other hand, when doing long urban walks (mainly on concrete ) my foot muscles just die - in effect a massive cramp.
So, I reckon that perhaps you did a lot of walking in a manner or surface that you were not accustomed to?
As mentioned, this may relate to nerves, to blood flow (make sure your socks aren't too tight!), to muscles (those you don't commonly use), or to tendons (as the last). Ice packs are very good for relieving immediate symptoms and support bandages can help you get around despite the pain
So, perhaps, get back into practice by doing some flat walking, change your boots maybe. Hope it's better soon! Quote:

| | | Re: Foot Pain Sorry to hear about the foot pain - its such a nuisance when anything like this happens and it does happen more frequently as you get older and bits of your body wears out or just refuses to get on with things
I have damage to the sheathing which holds the tendons coming round the left side of my right ankle joint. Its been like this for 20 years since a motorcycle accident which crush-bounced my right leg and it seems tore this sheathing. One unwary movement (pushing up from a chair) can set it off and I can't put my foot to the floor after or rotate my ankle without excruciating pain. I've got around over the years by wearing a tubigrip bandage doubled over and over until its really tight around my ankle. I was told in the past that surgery could poss correct it but that I would always limp after due to shortening of the tendons during the op, so I've avoided this. I was also told that when I got older and went thro the change the loss of hormone makes your joints less mobile and the problem would be less likely to happen and this indeed is just what has happened. Recently I walked as normal without a bandage for about two months - for the first time in 20 years! (So there are some good things about getting older!) Its been a problem cos obvioulsy the tubigrip is much tighter than intended and it has caused endless cramp problems (which calcium and magnesium tabs seems to help).
Like the other wabbers I would have a think about your boots and whether they are doing their job properly - if you loosen them off is it better - or if you tighten them is that better? One year I wore nothing but Teva walking sandals right thro the 12 months - summer, winter, snow the lot and went walking in them in the countryside - tho I've never been a 'climber' like you. They are the old type with only the two straps - not full toe protection and the like - and daft and dangerous as some folk might think - it gave my bad foot a real rest from the restraint of shoes/boots as its almost like walking naturally in bare feet. I think it strengthened my muscles all round. I did actually buy size 8's when I'm only a size 6 - so there was a slight overlap which prevented my toes from reaching the edge and getting knocked. My feet were always warm (when very often they are cold in shoes/boots) and it meant I didn't have to worry about muddy conditions - just straight thro it and wash feet and sandals off at the end of the walk!
Hope it settles down soon and you can be back walking and climbing to those dizzy Lakeland tops!

| | | Re: Foot Pain Glad to say that the foot is improving all the time. Yesterday we did a 6.5 mile walk with other 1000 feet of ascent in the Lake District. I will just build it up slowly and hopefully will be able to do my usual 3 - 4 walks per week on the hills again soon.
Thanks for the helpfull and not so helpfull advice.
Regards,

Thanks Coasty. After the walk the other day there seemed to be no reaction but after a couple of days I started with a bit of pain again. Anyway with the weather as it is I don't seem to be missing too much.

Glad to hear there's a bit of improvement Dave Kidstypike and that you'll be back in your beloved fells but oooh coasty poor you - I cringed when I read that: I slipped and fell on my left knee cap a few weeks ago in the Lake District (I'm embarrased to say I was on the car park in Ambleside) and I know how painful that has been and I hadn't broken anything......

Hi Pauline
Teva walking sandals as you describe- brilliant! After I bought my first pair never looked back and it is amazing how warm they keep your feet too!
