We've just returned from a trip north of the border and one of the most interesting days was spent in Edinburgh. Not shopping, but walking some of the beautiful Water of Leith, along a 12 mile stretch which is an oasis near the center of this lovely city.
Explore Edinburgh has more information.
Scenicly the areas is very pretty - quiet with few walkers, but plenty of birds, flora and fauna and you may even be lucky enough to see an otter or the occasional kingfisher too. Views towards Edinburgh's fine architecture were rewarding, and by emerging every now an then to investigate Stockbridge, Dean etc. where there is plenty to interest historians too.
So if you have a couple of hours to spare in Edinburgh and don't want to partake of the usual tourist amusements, try the Water of Leith.
