getting a new bike?

I just wanted to share this info with you. In case any of you are thinking about buying a new bike, you should see if your employer is a participant of the cyclescheme. If they aren't you can ask them to join.

Get a tax free bike for work | CYCLESCHEME

If they are you can get a brand new bike for at least 33% off, more if your employer can claim back VAT. Essentially you get a tax free bike. I am going through the process of getting a bike in this scheme and think its a good way of encourging people to cycle to work.

Maybe this info will be of use to some of you

As I'm retired, would the wife be considered as my employer, 'cause she sure is bossy.

Re: getting a new bike?

The cycle to work initiative that the government is running is a great way to get more people using the bike as a way of getting to work. Its green, healthy and is really the best post-work stress relief around. I've just started doing it and it beats the hell out of sitting in my car for half an hour and slowly getting mroe and more irate...
This blog has some good info about the scheme and an article about a friend of mine who cycles to work via an EIGHTY mile roundtrip.
The freak.

Re: getting a new bike?

If it takes a 20 minutes to work in the car & 30 minutes by bike (10 minutes slower) just think how much with the amount of Carbon the car is kicking out in comparrison 100% and the impact that has on the enviroment then driving such a short distance is surely over the top

Re: getting a new bike?

there are lots of companies participating in the cycle to work scheme. Unfortunately in most cased this scheme is run in conjunction with halfords, and i can say from experience that they are not able to deliver. 3 months and 7 different bikes untill they could provide one that was fit for purpose.

Re: getting a new bike?

I dont see how in most cases it is in conjunction with halfords when there are lots of independant bikes shops involved in the scheme.

I got my bike from Winstanley bikes by mail order. I have to say i would not recommend them as first they had no record of having my cycle scheme voucher but found it weeks later, someone had already processed it but not informed anyone to dispatch my bike and secondly when they found the voucher, they told me my bike would be delivered in 3 business days and after 5 business day i rang up to find they hadn't bothered to dispatch it yet.
I now have my nice new Kona bike but they received my voucher september 19th recorded delivary, i only received my bike October 22nd.

Aside from that i saved loads of money and i would say its well worth it - just stay away from Winstanley bikes if you are ordering for delivary.

Re: getting a new bike

just a quick message to anyone thinking of buying something from winstanley bikes! dont bother!

i ordered an mtb bike helmet from them and they sent me a bag of washers instead so after numerous phone calls and a week or so later i finally get my helmet....it came in a battered box,the helmet was all dusty and scratched to bits and to top it all off it already had return to sender on the box with the full address of the previous person they sent it too!! how do they think they can get away with sending second hand goods out i dont know???ALL IN ALL I GIVE WINSTANLEY BIKES A BIG FAT ZERO!!!

MUST TRY HARDER...AVOID!!

Re: getting a new bike?

I'm considering selling my roadie through WAB! I know that 40% of the sale goes to the cause. It's a fast bent and one that no upright roadie has ever past, full stop! More to the point it's one in which I pass all the other roadies all the time

It cost me 2k and is in good condition, i'm hoping someone can meet me halfway! I'm not to sure how this works through WAB, but pm me if your interested. Burning is a lot of fun

Here's a piccy of the bike the only difference with mine is the carbon forks are matching colour to the frame, with some fade out to reveal a little taste carbon
