| | Windermere to Ambleside walk Just thought I'd tell you about a great walk we did this week from Windermere to Ambleside via Troutbeck.
It's a popular misconception that Windermere is teeming with visitors at this time of year and of course, it's quite easy to get off the beaten track. We walked up from Windermere to Orrest Head where the views of Lake Windermere were absolutely stunning. Clear skies gave a view right down to Morecambe Bay and across to other Lakeland hills in every direction. From Orrest Head we made our way down through fields, farms, over becks and lanes eventually to Troutbeck, which never fails to interest. The beautiful and functional buildings in this village are well worth a detour before you double back to the Post Office and the nearby lane leading to Ambleside.
Up then and over along a well signposted route with, again, views which change every few yards. Reminiscent of Switzerland in places, with trickling streams pouring over boulders and groups of wild flowers at margins, in addition to various birds, butterflies and insects it is a walk to be recommended to those who can deal with a bit of exertion and the odd steep ascent/descent. Probably 6 - 7 miles in length, with basic food and drink together with a warm welcome available at Troutbeck Post Office. I look forward to next time.
And there's a bus back from Ambleside for some of the day and evening, if your feet have had enough. Add to that no 'retail therapy' required - perfick! |

This time next week I will be back in Cumbria and I can barely contain myself I will be out walking and have a few trips planned but the rest of the time it will be just off and out and see what we see. I just want to breath in that wonderful air and scenery - heaven! |
