Video edit / converter software recomendations

Hi,can anyone recomend any good video editing software, for around the £50 mark ? I am looking for something that will convert the video from my Canon 7D,so I can view it through standard dvd on the tele and keep it at a high quality,I would also like to be able to fade from one clip to another, perhaps add music and titles ect, mainly to share with friends and family. The converter in Canons Zoom browser appears to only offer conversion to AVI at a much slower frame rate than what it was filmed at.Something simple but effective to use would be a big bonus.Any recomendations ?

Re: Video edit / converter software recomendations

This is a nightmare, how can it be so hard ? What is the point of having an HD video facility, that you can only watch on your P.C ? Unless you are a video editing genius ...All I want to do is be able to burn the high quality video from my 7D onto a DVD and keep that high quality,so I can share it with people who don`t own a P.C,It is getting very frustrating......I can view my video fine in windows 7,and VLC player, but that does not help my friends and family who do not own a P.C,why have Canon made this so so difficult.

Do a Google or Youtube search - you should be able to find free s/ware conversion to burn a DVD - good luck

Re: Video edit / converter software recomendations

I had a similar problem.

I have a Canon 7D and the video from that copied to a DVD does not run smoothly.

I have been told by a computer techie mate that the DVD is too slow at recording to cope with the rate of info from an HD movie.

If I copy the movie to a memory stick, this will play it with no problems. This solution does not directly address the problem but may find a way round it.

Re: Video edit / converter software recomendations

Hello, I have been asked to see if I can give some input on this subject. I will try to keep things simple but can be and is a very complex subject. So in answer to the last question first, how hard can it be the answer is very hard if you are not familiar with post production process.

The first issue is that what you are asking is not quite as clear cut as you might imagine..However if you dont mind getting your hands dirty with computers the good news is that once you have worked out your video work flow, you dont have to change it unless you intend to supply the footage to a differant party. So if it just for making a DVD to give to people to watch on the TV then once you have a working post production workflow you will not need to change it...

This is not entirely correct but at this stage im happy to sweep a few issues under the carpet for now to simply try to help!

My first question would be what computer are you trying to work with?? MAC or PC? If you have a mac you are in better shape to tackle this, I have both and use the MAC for video footage mainly.

Then we really need to know your level of computer/video knowledge , for instance are you aware that there are different types of DVD for example and do you know what a codec is?

The simple answer is you are asking a question a little like ''I want to go to B&Q and buy a tool that will fix my house, what should i get, how hard can it be?'' Well if you want to put some shelves up get a battery drill, a drill bit and a spirit level''

What i mean by that is the question is still a little general, the job isnt that hard and will take no more than a morning to do even for a novice. But you need to get the right tools for the job. There is no one piece of software to solve this.....

So lets start,,the Canon EOS records amazing video, so good they use it on House, 24, george lucas and Ron Howard are using 7D and 5D mk11 as additional cameras now..Why?? Because if you need 5 camera angle for an action sequence or a stunt you do the action once and film it from 5 angles..This may seem obvious to people reading this. However it has never been done this way, films and drama are shot primarily on ONE camera and they do things 3/4/5 times shot from different angles..Why you ask, well 35mm film camera with a set of lenses are so expensive that people dont really own them they can only afford to hire them for the project..A single lens will cost around £20,000....

Now the shocker is the footage produced by these DSLR is comparable to the footage produce from the film cameras costing hundreds of thousands..

So how come the footage from my EOS 550d is almost as good as from full scale movie cameras?? There must be a catch??

There is, it the way the footage is record. Now without going into detail it basically put onto your memory card in a format that is great for internet viewing but xexexexe for video editing. Or to put it another way its a bit like saying the footage on you card is recorded in a viewing format NOT an editing format....

So step one and tool number one that we need is to convert our footage from the 7D (which is called h.264) and make it into something our video editing software will be happy to play with......but how do we do that and is it expensive i hear you ask??

Well here is the first bit of good news the software most people use is by a company called Squared 5 the package in called MPEG Streamclip and its FREE!! Squared 5 - MPEG Streamclip video converter for Mac and Windows

Now i cant go into how to use this software on here, but look on you tube and Squared 5 website...

It is really very simple, it ingests the file/s you ask it to and spits out a converted version that you import into you video editing package...

To stop this from being an epic posting let me lay out the basic workflow

1 - Footage acquired from DLSR on card is transcribed with first package (MPEG streamclip will do)

2 - Footage is edited in second package (Movie maker on windows? I Movie on mac? I use Final Cut Pro on a MAC)

3 - Final cut version of film is outputted from editing package

4 - DVD is authored using you fav DVD burning package (something like NERO worked for me on PC....)

Sorry this was so long, its fair to say that video is as bigger subject than stills..just dont get too bogged down with the subject. As i say once you have your little workflow sorted its easy and you have a little production line that you can churn you films through..

it is a step learing curve to begin with but after the first one is done you can look back and say its really easy...

luv P

Re: Video edit / converter software recomendations

Thank you so much for your input,I shall investigate further as time permits, are we likely to lose quality through conversion ? I personally use a P.C,that could make an interesting poll though.I am sure we will have more questions for you.

Thanks again.

Re: Video edit / converter software recomendations

Hello again, regarding quality loss during conversion the answer is no. Due to the fact that we are now in the digital realm there is absolutely no loss of quality whatsoever.

Regarding working on a PC, im assuming you have windows movie maker? I have it on my laptop but have only looked at it once.. you can do all the usual home movie editing and music overlay plus transitions with it. Editing really only needs a very basic package if you are starting out. Avoid all those horrible starburst wipes etc they are naff...

Im sure a quick search on google will tell you what the best format to convert the H264 into to use with Movie Maker?? I convert to Apple ProRes for use on the MAC with Final Cut...I belive canon have released a plug in for Final Cut now to help with the very problem you have flagged up in the first posting...Please bear in mind Canon have made this movie facilty for filmakers to utilise the great chip in the 7D and 5D Mk2. this is why it is not easy for a beginner to do this stuff. They have assumed a working knowledge. I guess there argument would be, we make a range of point and shoot and semi pro camcorders already. If people dont understand DSLR they should buy a camcorder.. A fair point its like buying a bridge camera or a compact..using DSLR requires you to know about audio and post production to make it work for you...

However it really is amazing what you can do with a cheap DSLR like the 7D and a little knowledge compared with a HD video camera setup costing ten times more.....I love the 550D it is so small and light its crazy and the fact it uses cheap SD cards is brilliant..I know someone who is putting on a toy helicopter and shooting footage that would cost around £1000 per hour to shoot the proper way...he has bought all the gear to do as many hours as he likes for the cost of a couple of hours..plus he owns the gear so could sell it and make some money back....this is a no brainer really.. DSLRs for video are a fantastic tool..you just need to accept you are saving thousands, well tens of thousands and getting something almost as good, plus a great camera for timelapse and a pretty brilliant stills camera to...

The way i look at it is i have bought a little video camera (550D) and I have got a free stills camera at the same time...the fact that i can go on location with a tiny DSLR shot some stills and then think i want video of that too..i dont have to go and get more gear from the car i just flick a switch on my tiny DSLR its mind boggling really...Just learn to accept its limitations and the Canon 5D mk2, 7D, 60D, and 550D are just about the single most exciting thing that has happened to film making ever!!

Sorry Nikon owners- i would like to add that if its low light shooting you want to do then look at Nikon...they are better than Canon.....

As i said i use Nikon lens but Canon bodies...just the best value setup i have found and i like the EOS utilty for messing with picture profiles....I even have a M42 mount lens i use and a Tamron AD2 mount...just use the best quality glass you can get you hands on for little money.....Avoid the old Canon FD stuff, there is an adaptor sure but it requires an element in the FD to EF so an extra bit of low quality glass is then between lens and chip..hmm no thanks...but old nikon, zeiss, or leica lenses just go straight on...my nikon 130mm F2.8 was only £30 on Ebay!! So thats a 200mm f2.8 nikkon for my Eos for £30 its crazy...i have a nikkor 28 and a 50mm F1.4 both around £30 too...its fun breathing new life into these old lenses from the 1960's!!!

enjoys filmaking people..

I think I done that the other way round,by buying a superb stills camera, and getting a little video camera thrown in. I am sure I will be bugging you again for some help at a later date.I disagree if Canon thought that the video would only interest people who were already really into video, there is a large percentage of new released cameras offering HD video,I wonder if those from Nikon Panasonic and Sony ect,are just as amateur unfriendly when it comes to sharing outside of computers ? I think it`s a shame it is so difficult to learn for the unknowing.

Re: Video edit / converter software recomendations

Thanks SWS

I have been able to link together snippets taken using my Panasonic FZ30, 7D and phone as separate litle films. I have then edited them using Windows Live Film Maker as suggested.

Much much easier viewing - although unfortunately it does not improve the content!
