| | Could we have a Video Thread please??? Could we have a new section within the "outdoor activities" section, separate from photography, for video?
When ever I post a thread regarding video, (camcorders, webcams, video on the web, etc) loads of people always reply... it's obviously a popular subject.
I know we can't upload video to the forum/site... but surely we could have a separate section (like the photographers have) for our techie questions and problems?
What do others think?

| | | Re: Could we have a Video Thread please??? I can think of so many things we could ask questions about.
What videocameras do people have?
What software do you use for editing?
How do you set up a webcam?
How do you set up a cctv wildlife watching camera in your garden?
Garden nestbox cameras?
How do you upload video to the internet?
Where do you learn how to video wildlife?
Tips for wildlife videoing
The list is endless.... I'm sure there are lots of people on WAB who would like to chat about these problems, or find solutions...
I know I'm one of them!

The subject can be a mine field for the beginner - best camera, tripod, sound equipment, editing software etc, etc.
I've only been into video for the past five years before that it was 16mm and before that as a wee lad 8mm.
Currently using a Canon XL H1 and XL2 with a variety of EOS lens, 100-400mm, 600mm, 180mm macro, Sigma 300-800mm. Arrow / Miller 925-55 fluid head tripod, Fostex Field Recorder and various gun mikes. Editing - Final Cut on a Apple Mac.
Always willing to give any advice, although I'm working and filming on Natural History in the professional end of the subject and not much up on camcorders at the lower end of the price bracket.
As for Johnny K - don't knock the guy, I know him well a good decent down to earth chap that's brought something to the box that was much needed. Over the past few years we've seen so much from the more remote and exotic areas of the world its good to get back home. I myself have had numerous opportunities to travel and film , but prefer to stay on home ground where there is still a magnitude of down to earth subjects to film - as Mr K has shown.

| | | Re: Could we have a Video Thread please??? I keep asking for a video section... but was told the server couldn't cope with it. Maybe now the server has been upgraded we will see a video upload section soon! I for one will be first in the queue to submit stuff.
However, what I would really like is a separate "video" forum section - so that we can chat about "do's and don'ts" etc - which wouldn't need extra video space!
I've had my Canon XL1S for about 8 months now and LOVE IT. I'm in the process of teaching myself video editing (so that I can shut myself away over the winter editing) and have joined my local video club (which is brilliant).
Live in hope!

Just going through all the various setups for adding videos to the new server at the moment.
We get quite a few requests for new forums and so we generally wait until there's at least 100+ threads on a topic before thinking about adding it to the site, basically to avoid having a long list of virtually empty forums on here.
I got a Sony EX1 a couple of months ago so I'm as eager as anyone to get vids on and now that the big server upgrade is pretty much out the way I'll hopefully be able to get it sorted out soon

Thanks

| | | Re: Could we have a Video Thread please??? Hi Dave
Yes it is a Pro camera and excellent for wildlife use owing to its size and weight. I use both a XL H1 and XL2 in a professional capacity. I lot of what you see on the box is shot with both of these camera's
It will take Canon EF fit lens via a EF/XL adaptor also Sigma etc lens if they are EF mount.
One of the up points of being able to use EF lens is the increase in their focal length when used with the EF/XL adaptor. Depending on whether you are filming in 4:3 or 16:9 their focal length is increased by, in the case of 4:3 by 8.8x this makes a 100mm lens into 880mm a 600mm which I frequently use into a whopping 5280mm!
The increase when in the 16:9 mode is 7.2x thus making the 100mm into 720mm and the 600mm into 4320mm.
Would mention here that when using such large focal length lens a very sturdy tripod is a must. I use a Arrow/Miller which is an excellent tripod and rock solid. The downside is its weight if you are transporting it over any great distance especially rough ground and its cost at over £3000.
Hope this is of some help, but do come back if you require any further info.

| | | Re: Could we have a Video Thread please??? I believe you can also use other lenses other than EF lenses.
I'm having an adaptor made for my XL1S so that I can use a Huntar MC Auto 80-205mm Lens and Makinon MC 28-70mm Lens both of which are FD fittings and were on my old SLR camera. Cost is about £180 from Les Bosher - Camera Engineer

| | | Re: Could we have a Video Thread please??? Yes I believe that is so but have no experience of other lens other than Canon for use with the XL/H1 & 2.
I should mention that I also use for News Coverage a Sony HDP-790P together with Canon KH21ex5.7 lens a very good set up.
There are several firms that do this sort of work - making various mounts and adaptors.
Are you filming professionally?
