| | | Record breaking July.....? .. but for all the wrong reasons: I've been running my weather station since January 2001, and the wettest July we've had in that period was July 2009 when we had 122.5 mm of rain. To date, we have already had 102.8 mm. So that record could go - as could the wettest month of all - 130.0 mm in October 2005.
Here in the NE Highlands we tend to avoid the wet weather that hits the west, but seemingly not this month, though I'm sure their totals will still exceed ours. Most will have seen the scenes from the Scottish Open golf championship earlier this month when they were flooded out at Inverness.
And I feel so sorry for the holidaymakers that head up here, with many hoping to take to the hills - a complete washout!! Strathspey Weather

| | | Re: Record breaking July.....? It seems worse considering that the spring started with such promise. Back in April/early May, moth species were on the wing 2 or 3 weeks earlier than usual in quite a few parts of Scotland, including locally, and it looked like it was going to be a great summer. Spring flowers were earlier than previous years as well.
It's so dull today that I've had the living room light on most of the time, at times it's been almost dark and the rain has been heavy. Not as heavy as last Saturday when I got soaked at Insh Marshes, then again a couple of hours later at Loch Insh. I suppose the only good thing is that most of the time it hasn't been cold, although I heard there was somewhere in the west that got down to freezing one night last week.
I suppose you saw the Strathy a few weeks ago predicting a winter worse than 2009/2010. If it's accurate I might have to take up cross country skiing.
Regards, Audrey. |

Regards, Audrey. | Hi Audrey - There are only 2 months of the year here which we can more or less be sure will be frost-free - and that's July and August. But we came close this month with 0.6c last week on the 13th - and a minus 1.4 last month on the 10th. Personally, I'm looking forward to early October, which more often than not provides some pleasant settled weather.
As for the winter predictions - Are these the same people that forecast a scorching summer?? I expect severe winters here, so I don't mind them too much, but am I expecting too much for a warm dry summer? It certainly seems so!
