| | | Damage from the storm Has anyone had any significant damage from the storm?
The wind has been howling here all day and the electricity going on and off like a yo-yo (does not do the computers any good!).
We have 2 trees down and lost another silver birch last week. Looks like we will have enough firewood for a while. We have not been out for a closer inspection so hope we have not lost anything else.

| | | Re: Damage from the storm Our garden shed was totally destroyed and the large patio table we had, learnt to fly for a short while before coming back to ground and smashing into pieces. Thankfully as far as I can tell at the moment all our garden trees seem to be still standing.
On a local level the damage here is huge I have seen at least a dozen large trees that have been up rooted today as well as countless huge branches snapped off of others, there are fences down everywhere you look, smashed wheelie bins etc....
It has to be the windiest day we have had here in the East Midlands for many years, possibly since the big storm of 87! |

| | | Re: Damage from the storm We had 75mph winds from mid morning to mid afternoon in North Lincolnshire, thankfully they have died down somewhat now. Didn't suffer any damage that I can see ourselves the only small length of garden fence we have went for a burton in last weeks storm and I hadn't replaced it yet which is just as well. There were many trees down in the Lincs area and many lorries on their sides on the M180 and M18 motorways though.

| | | Re: Damage from the storm Having now seen it on the news, I think we were lucky! Perhaps I should not speak too soon. I will check out the total damage in the morning.
In the 87 storm we lost our power for a week (nightmare) so I sympathise with anyone without power this evening.

| | | Re: Damage from the storm Electric has been off most of the day and is still iffy, we have lost three fence panels and it was on the radio that gusts of 91 miles an hour were recorded on Winter Hill, which is less than 10 miles away, we have just had a quick look round and the panels seem to be the only damage thankfully, hope every one else is okay.

| | | Re: Damage from the storm I was on the way back from UNI today when a huge tree came down covering the road in front of me. The car in front tried to avoid it and ended up in the ditch. I was almost fryed (To the delight of some) by a power-line. I called 999 and they were there within a couple of minutes. The one good thing from it all was the fact that the UNI computers and power all went down from it and gave us all more time for our projects and the rest of the day off.
It was strange because our lecture today was about wind thrown trees!!!
When I got home the fence was also down
Best wishes

| | | Re: Damage from the storm Just got back from field teaching in a South London school. The roads were chaos and we drove around a London plain tree that had come down. It was huge. I can't imagine what that was like crashing down. We also saw a wall, about 80' or so long and about 7' high had crashed down. Fire brigade were very busy and Dartford bridge closed.
We've lost a fence panel,so we've got off lightly.Winds have dropped a little now.

| | | Re: Damage from the storm My dad called round tonight to drop of my son and asked if I'd seen outside... the fascia has been blown off the side of the house but luckily has landed on top of the garage and not injured anyone or caused any damage itself...
The tiles were blown off the roof at the school where I work and one has hit a girl on the head. The school had to be closed early and will be closed tomorrow as well so that we can get the roof sorted.

| | | Re: Damage from the storm I seem to have got off fairly lightly. The only thing I have seen so far is that my greenhouse roof and door have been ripped away. All the bird feeders have been blown off whatever they were hanging on and all the seed is strewn over the garden. The dustbins and recycling boxes had been blown across the garden but I will have to wait until daylight before I can see if there is any other damage.
On the local front every motorway (apart from the M40 - I think) had a section of road closed which caused chaos on the local roads. That was the M1, M5, M6, M42, M69. I can't recall that happening before.

| | | Re: Damage from the storm 3 trees down in my local park in London suburbs. A Lombardy Poplar near an entrance snapped from the base, demolishing somebody's garden fence- at least it missed the house. Also a Leyllandii + a small Prunus were uprooted, otherwise twigs + branches everywhere.
Today, a lovely day-sunny, mild + breezy! |

There's a bright side to this - there are a lot of insects that overwinter in the tree canopy and seldom get observed - while you have the chance, go and look around in the *top* of the tree!

I trust they will recover. |
