| | | Why is it so cold? Does anyone know why it is so cold, and hasn't really been that warm this summer?
When the sun's out the heat is strong. But in the shade or wind it's cold enough to numb your fingers and see your breath, as you will have probably noticed yourselves.
This is unusual. I mean, our summers are never very remarkable but it never seems to have reached the typical summer temperatures at all this year. |

| | | Re: Why is it so cold? I am with you Amoeba on this one I am in Northants and yes the last few days have been scorching but today it is cold.
I was in fuerteventura in June and got burnt as the wind was so cold I didn't feel how hot the sun was and didn't realise I was burning and at night it was freezing.
I only took a sweatshirt and jeans that were for cold weather and what I travelled in, the rest were skimpy summer clothes.
Never will I go there again I like to feel warm abroad that's why you go.
I was cold most of the time there. |

I'm asking because we had a bit of warm weather in the beginning of June but the wind was still a bit chilly, but our whole summer has been pretty cold. We've had no "scorching" days. The wind has been gusty and frosty on the fingers every day (my hands feel numb when I get inside, something I only expect in early spring/late autumn). Lots of clouds, no clear blue skies at all. I always need to go out with a jumper on and sometimes more. Last year I wouldn't have considered to be warm but I was still able to wear a t shirt most dry days.
I'm in Edinburgh, if anyone knows a scientific reason for this please let me know. I suffer from SAD syndrome, but not just affected by light levels (but still so this summer because of the lack of sunshine), but also low temperatures too. I feel like I'm having no respite from the cold weather at all.
Please no snarky comments about it always being cold in Scotland, I've lived here my whole life and I know that the temperatures we're getting now are very abnormally cold. |

Could be "normal climate changes" as the weather does go through natural cycles anyway.
For the last 3 years or so holidays in Cornwall have been very wet and cold in August but about 5 years ago it was really hot then it started to change and has gone down hill ever since.
I was in Scotland in the highlands in Jan this year and the sun was shining the pics I took looked like summer shots apart from the odd bit of snow on the mountains.
It was beautiful but bitterly cold.

| | | Re: Why is it so cold? I'm from Edinburgh originally, and know just how cold it can feel when the wind is blowing off the sea - even in bright sunshine. I've relatives in Edinburgh and Fife, but haven't heard any of them complaining about it being particularly cold this year.
Different people feel temperature differently, for example, a friend from my Botany group will be sitting having lunch wearing thick cotton trousers and three layers on her top half, whilst I'm right next to her wearing thin cotton trousers and a short-sleeved T-shirt. She'll be feeling cold, whilst I'm too hot.
My point is, are your friends and family also feeling as cold as you this year? If they are, then I've no idea why it is so cold, personally I hate the expression "Global Warming" because everyone thinks we'll end up warmer, whilst in reality Climate Change could mean some of us end up colder and/or wetter.
However, if your friends and family aren't feeling as cold as you, maybe you are just a bit more sensitive to colder temeratures or maybe you have something like anaemia, or are a bit run down. If others are feeling fine, and this has come on fairly suddenly, it may be worthwhile having a check up with your GP.
Up here in Aviemore it has been pretty warm since we got rid of the snow and summer started. In the last couple of years I've noticed that in summer we seem to be getting more sunshine and less rain than in Central Scotland.

It was beautiful but bitterly cold. | Yeah it is very weird how the weather is getting. Our winter was about as bad as the rest of Britain, I'd never seen so much snow in my life! Quote:

I hope your weather improves soon. | Actually there is England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland, I meant to say four in total nor four as well as England. You're right it might do you good to look that up.
As I said I've lived here my whole life, Edinburgh isn't the warmest place in the UK but it still gets warmer than this in summer. Quote:

Reagrds, Audrey. | Yeah I think it can depend even on what part of Edinburgh you're in. At my granny's side you always expect it to be a little chilly from the sea breeze, but where I live is much further inland and is normally a lot warmer.
Yeah I know what you mean about it not always causing warming. Climate changes in general, goes through cycles. While there may be a general trend towards warming, there may still be moments of cooling or variations depending on location.
My family have noticed it hasn't been all that warm, my grandma has commented on how it feels cold and she's put on the heater a few times (something we've never had to do before in summer!). My friend says he's still wearing two pairs of trousers at a time, lol!
Hm, I wonder if much of the rain the North normally experiences is shifting down to central/Southern Scotland? Like a shift in the typical location in the jet stream?
Could the jet stream have anything to do with it?
Thanks for your input guys. | | | | | Thread Tools | | | | Display Modes | Linear Mode |
