Into the storm

As I write, southern England is being buffetted by strong winds, and it has just started raining. Not to be deterred by this, I'm preparing to go out with my camera and plan to get some inclement weather photos from the coast. I'll post an image if I get anything worth while.

Re: Into the storm

Well I'm an early riser in any case, but I defy anyone to sleep through the storm that's raging here over the SE. Very strong winds and rain are buffeting the patio doors and windows.
Events like this always remind me of 16th October 1987, when here in the SE we suffered some of the worse damage imaginable, after the 'hurricane' passed over us.
Luckily, the trees have lost all of their leaves here now, so don't act like bid sails as they did on the night of the 16th.
I fear we're going to get these sort of events more frequently, as weather patterns alter.

Off to batten down the hatches.

Re: Into the storm

I hope the coastal pix come out well. I was out at 1am fetching my three recycle boxes from up the street! Luckily the contents weren't scattered!

Re: Into the storm

The wind has started to get up here, the rain has only just started. The trees come down more if it is very wet like in 87 as the roots don't hold so well.

Yes. Quite right. That was another big factor.

Re: Into the storm

It was very stormy in the night here, but the wind has died down a bit now. The heavy rain is still coming down though.

Could be worse. I could have been a bird or other creature getting battered about!

Good luck with the coastal shots!

Re: Into the storm

The wind has passed over us here now, though we're still mopping up from the torrential rain. The wind was nothing like as fierce as that howling monster we had in 1987 here though. We lost a lilac tree in the garden that night, which just missed the house.

Re: Into the storm

We're quite sheltered here but that was the worst windy weather we've had here and we wern't supposed to get it. It was going on all night then the rain really lashed down and as it started to get light everything went calm. Less damage in the garden than I thought. A fence panel has come down.

Wink Re: Into the storm

I lived throught the storm of 87 frightened me, I was a young mother left with alone with no electricity with a small child. Guess where I am now...the Outer Hebrides and those winds are normal now to me. Though when I hear that whoopping sound...only ever heard before in 87, I do feel a little nervous. The winds were reaching 60mph here last night.....we have just had about 2 hours of torrential rain. Tonight is supposed to be mean speeds of 60 mph with gusts that means of 80mph.

The good news we don't have any trees to fall down, they don't grow!! The wind is measured as follows:

25mph plant in garden waves about
35mph lamp posts start to shake
45mph letter box starts to rattle - shops sell out of bread and milk no ferry
55mph wheelie bins gone - schools close as causeways dangerous to cross
65mph roof tiles lift and thump down making it impossible to sleep
70mph strange whooping noise
80mph roof tiles on floors, sheep all over the town (fence blown down)
90mph no electricity, no food and seaweed blown miles in.

We don't have rivers to flood here the grounds gets over satuated and runs down roads, enters lochs which in turn floods the ground and starts all over again until it gets to the sea.

Why am I here........pass the sun tan lotion, sunglasses and passport.

Re: Into the storm

Terribly stormy here last night. I did not get much sleep. I have not checked all of our trees yet. I hope we have not lost any.

However, there was a tree in the farmers field which is directly in front of my house. In that field, until last night there was a dead tree. Sadly it is there no longer.

Why am I worried about a dead tree? Two buzzards and a kestrel used to sit on its branches and I have spent many happy hours watching them. I will really miss that tree!

Jenny

Re: Into the storm

What a difference a few hours make. It's now very breezy but warmish with bright blue cloudless skies.

Re: Into the storm

Yep Steve ands I experienced that last night. Within a 20 minute period the winds had developed rapidly. It was lovely and still when we arrived at the reserve but given 20 minutes you could see something was on its way

Re: Into the storm

I've just posted an image in the weather gallery, shot at 8:00am today. It's of a view looking east towards Hengistbury head, Dorset, and at the time conditions were still poor. As I write, the worst part of the storm seems to have relented, but the winds are still with us despite developing clear spells.

Re: Into the storm

Bit gusty at the moment but last night was awful.Had a job to get to sleep with alsorts flying up the road and around the gardens.Despite the double glazing I could here it whistling. When I looked out the window it was dry but the trees on the estate were leaning right over and the autumn leaves were literally speeding up the road.Beautiful blue skies today though Oh and my feeders are on the other side of the garden on the ground
